Front Tire Wear & Alignment - 20" Sport

We've got a 50i with Sports Package on the original 20" Staggered wheels.

We have always struggled to not chew through tires on the vehicle with the Bridgestone Potenza Summer tires or Pirelli Snow's we have for the setup.

Has anyone else had this issue?

The outer shoulders simply get chewed up and the drivers side is worse than the passengers.

What settings has anyone found to not cause extreme wear?

I know I have read where these things are difficult to get good setups on but front tires are lasting maybe 10k miles? Only option is a camber kit?

Just doesn't seem right. It's driven by my wife daily which means no shenanigans. Never pushed hard.

Dealership continues to tell us its within BMW Spec, which it is on the sheet. Just trying to figure out how I should be getting them to align it so they last a little longer.

The alignment specs on the X5 are crap IMHO. It is the amount of toe-in for the fronts and the toe-in and negative camber for the rears. You want to run the absolute minimum toe-in front and rear and go the least amount of negative camber in the rear as per spec. This will slow down that wear. There is no camber adjustment for the fronts with the stock suspension.

Tire pressure should be a bit higher than normal so that it doesn't rollover the sidewalls as much.

Toe-in on the alignment, should be at 0.01deg. Anything larger than 0.03, I'd complain. Excessive toe-in, would cause an outer scrub like that.

Worse comes to worse, it's about $1k parts and labor to install the -0.5 camber arms from BMW.

Thanks to both of you who have responded. I figured the Toe was one of the bigger issues from what I had read with the Camber.

I was thinking about checking the tire pressure when we got it back as I normally don't since the tires are only on for about 6 months and the dealership does them every time.

I have yet to look at the sheet this time as I have not picked up the vehicle. Ill see it in the morning and if the Toe isn't close to 0, Ill get them to put it up again.

Have to see what happens from there. Ill post specs of the final alignment and put updates as it goes or whatever the dealership tells me. Mostly they have said "we have seen these wide tires wear poorly on this vehicle".

Ditto on the toe. I would aim for close to zero toe.

Also regarding inflation pressure, check your manual, there are two recommended settings. I set mine to the higher setting. It doesn't feel as great as the lower setting but it does help mpgs and wear

So, as an update, I stopped by the dealership this morning to review the specs sheet before we picked the vehicle up.

Toe for both sides was at the 0.05-0.07 range. I asked them to try again and get it closer to 0. Of course that is outside of the recommended "green" zone from BMW which meant I had to hand write that I wanted it outside of the "green" zone.

Thankfully my SA is awesome and puts up with my OCD car nature.

See if they struggle to get it closer to 0. Ill post final results and follow up once we get some mileage on the new tires as to how they are holding up. We put a lot of miles on vehicles so it shouldn't be that long to see how it does.

Like I said, as close to 0.01, anything more than 0.03, complain.

It's sad but true. People (not saying my dealership as they have treated us extremely well for a long time) in general have very little respect or desire to go above and beyond anymore or to get things 100% right. Either have to go by some piece of paper or whatever it takes to get by.

Anymore I find every single thing we go to do, I have to be the one to research and analyze everything about it even when talking to an "expert" because typically I can google and find more information to be better educated than said "expert".

Either way, back on track. Other half picked up the vehicle and isn't complaining about anything. We are about to head out for the evening so Ill post the alignment specs probably in the morning and give feedback on how they drive.

Anything has to beat how loud the old tires had gotten with the nearly bald, scalloped shoulders. Going down the highway was sounding nearly like my Jeep Wrangler with 35" mud tires!

Here's what a typical (Hunter) alignment visual looks like (this is mine - 2012 X5 50i one year ago). Depending on the machine calibration, the green and red zones will turn color when the value is +/- 1% off target:

This is a great sheet.

I am traveling on business and was unable to get my hands on the sheet from ours. Once I get home over the weekend I will try to post our results.

From driving the vehicle things drove really nice and I didn't experience any extreme tracking or at least any worse tracking than what the vehicle previously had. Drove quite well.

Always thought the steering was heavy and direct in it until I got my M and now it feels crazy loose and numb.
