Going with the Continentals DWS non run flats

Should get them installed tomorrow. Looking forward to a bit more comfortable ride.

Just got them myself on the staggered 20's. There is a noticeable difference in ride yet they handle great in high speed maneuvering. The tread pattern is good looking as well. For the money they seem like a winner.

That's good to hear; mine is also the 20" staggered setup as well.

Did you guys happen to consider the Toyo Proxes STII, and if so, why did you go with the DWS?

I'm trying to decide between the two...

For me it was more two reasons which may or may not be true:

1. Continentals tend to be more geared towards luxury vehicles

2. The Toyo's are engineered more for trucks/suvs & I just thought the ride quality may be not as plush as the continentals

I can't comment on DWS on X5 and how they compare to Proxes, but I have them on my other car (Mini). While they do provide much better ride than the Dunlop run-flats they replaced, they are rather noisy, which is disappointing as I was expecting improvement over Dunlops.

So for myself I've decided to go with Proxes for X5 since you can rotate them left-right to address the excessive inside wear in the rear.

I did compare the two and I thought the Conti's had a better tread pattern. Just my opinion from looking at the two although I'm not a tire expert.

Anything has got to be quiter than these crappy 20" Duns...
BTW, you could also rotate the DWS left-right, but I understand why you would want to try the Toyos. Toyos are also less expensive.

I actually prefer the tread pattern on the Toyos.
I wonder between the two which would be better in light snow.

If I remember correctly, Les Schwab will fix the punctures in Toyo tires free of charge. Not sure if this goes as far as replacing the tire when sidewal is damaged, but somethign to consider.
Seems like Continental DWS can only be purchased from TireRack. How's warranty handled with TireRack? I am reading about lots of vibration issues with ContiDWS. If stores don't carry them, could be a problem waiting for days for replacement from TireRack..

I have the proxes stII's with about 7,000 miles on them. I also looked at the DWS and was worried about some of the reviews. Prices are about the same now on both tires. Here's the positives on toyo. I've only used 1/32 of tread in 7,000 miles. There's 11/32 of tread on the tire so I'm guessing it's safe to say i'll get 60-70k Miles out of them. They're whisper quiet on the interstate, but a little hum around 20-30 mph. Excellent on not hydroplaning and excellent wet grip. Now for the negatives. After 7,000 miles one of the two back tires has developed a vibration that starts around 60mph and progressively gets worse all the way up to 100mph. BMW determined it was the tires after they put a completely new set of wheels and tires from another X5 on mine and the vibration went away. So they checked the run out on my wheels and they were true. Dealing with toyo on warranty hasn't been easy. One customer service rep was nice, while another was rude and wouldn't help me even though I have the receipt for purchase. They're now replacing the two tires, but they're not covering shipping or labor to mount the new tires. Hope this info helps you guys!

No, DWS have 'outside' designation, so if you have inside wear, you can't rotate the tire on the rim and put it on the other side (=to make inside outside, so to speak).

Oh, you were actually referring to unmounting the tire and reversing it. I was talking about being able to rotate side to side.

Just had the continentals installed & drove a few miles on the freeway.

First impression(s):
1. Quieter, smoother ride to the point that I know hear my stock exhaust tones a bit more than before. Only thing I can think of is the OEM Bridgestone rft mask the sound

2. Steering wheel turns much easier than before

3. Car seems a bit lighter probably due to less weight with the non rft's

4. Car feels a bit more top heavy; I noticed the Continentals look a bit smaller than the OEM rft's but the guy at America's Tire Store said the Continentals are not as square as the Bridgestone. Continentals are a bit rounder on the edge. Makes sense that it may lean a bit more than in turns.

Thanks for the feedback.
I too read reviews that the Contis appear a bit smaller, skinnier from the rear (although not sure how a 315 tire could look skinny!). Would you be able to take a pic from the rear? One good thing about the Duns was their stance from the rear.
Thanks

My rear Conti's look like I'm driving on tipped over 55 gallon drums!! You're right though, they aren't as square as the Dunlops but the stance is not much less aggressive and I'll give up that slight edge for what's gained in comfort and all season traction.

Spare?

What did you do about a spare, if anything?
Any thoughts on using "Spare Tire in a Can" sealer in lieu of a real spare?
If a sidewall gives out on either type tire (RFT/non-RFT), I think you're out of luck without a spare, so what's the difference?

I thought Conti's were a little too soft a rubber for a SUV?

I was contemplating going the route of purchasing the spare tire kit; but your point is well taken & spare tire in a can may be the solution (at least the cheaper solution).

I have AAA towing as well so I think I'm covered to an extent.
