Buying an x.5 4.6is this weekend. What to look for in service records?????
Hey everyone,
I am selling my beloved m3 tomorrow and purchasing an x5 4.6is which I am extremely excited for. We had an estoril blue x5 4.6is in 2004, which was stolen and chopped up. What should I be looking for in the service records? I am talking to the BMW mechanic who has taken care of the car since they bought it in 2003 (one owner). On the otherhand, if it did had work, which type of replacements should I be cautious about (ie, if the control arms were replaced, it might have had some type of frontal collision) I am new to the x5 world and would really appreciate any advice. Thank you

Congrats...definitely, the most rare X5 on the road and least produced. On my 2nd 4.6iS now so i've had a bit of experience...
The biggest issue with the 4.6iS is the torque converter. They are notorious for failing...both went south between 60-75k miles. If they start going bad and aren't addressed immediately, metalic shavings can pass through into trany, causing major wear and $$. Other things to look for: - Crank case/Oil separator - CV boots/axles - Control arms/bushings - Hoses and belts Be sure to get a list of past maintenance. Preventive maintenance is key with the iS models and they're considerably more $$ to repair/maintain than the other E53's. I'm actually parting with mine soon but feel free to reach out with any questions. Also selling parts if interested (check classifieds). |
