2011 X5 rear brakes
I have 32.000 miles on her now and she is complaining about rear brakes. Is that normal I thought the brakes would last 50,000 miles. I am taking her in tomorrow anyway

If you live in NY and NJ, that's not surprising at all. Lots of stop and go traffic, causing premature wear. It's a free replacement before 50k miles, you should be glad.

32000miles = 51,500kilometres
Mine is on 50,000km and I am down to 3mm on front and rear pads. The front rotor is undersized and will need to be replaced. The rear is OK. The rear pad is much smaller than the front which could explain the higher wear rate. The service guy told me that low speed stops put more wear on the rear and high speed puts more wear on the fronts! Looks like I do a bit of both. You guys (US) are very lucky its part of your warranty. Despite Australians paying at least double for their BMW's they dont recieve that priviledge (although BMW have begun adding free servicing to current offers). |

Rear brake pads were below spec, the car started warning me about this last week. They did rotors too and I asked them to change the wipers.

Had front and rear brakes (and rotors) replaced at 37K. Considering the amount of brake dust they produce, no wonder they wear out!
But on the plus side, X5 is a beast when it comes to stopping power. Beats many sports sedans in that department. |

I should have mentioned that the front sensor indicated that there was approx 20,000km to go when in reality there was about 2,000km. So the sensor is not always correct. |

I am looking at the invoice and they replaced rear pads and rotor. They mention the brake pad wear sensor but not clear what they did with that.

Doesn't really matter since brakes are covered under maintenance. I have a 3/4 ton Dodge diesel and I did not have to replace the brakes until 90K miles...

I had my front pads and rotors replaced at approx 45k km. Surprising as I do 95% motorway. Very little traffic and very few traffic lights on my usual routes.
Usually my rears are first to go and usually at a ratio of 2 brake pads to 1 rotor. On average I can get 100k km before needing a brake pad change in my other/previous cars. I can only guess that the weight of the X5 plays a huge part and perhaps the xdrive system uses the brakes frequently. |

I have now replaced the pads and have the worn items in my possession. At circa 51,000km I had 3mm on the front and about 5mm in the rear remaining. I think new the minimum thickness is 10mm so, at least for the rears, I could have gone for another 30,000-50,000km!
The sensors indicated that the pads were worn which is why I had them changed. The new sensors are indicating 50,000km before the next change so effectively they are a countdown clock and not that accurate it would seem. |
