need some input please

Hi all,

the other night engine light came on but drove fine. This morning i turned it on and the car was shaking during idle and i was in limp mode. Brought it to a local shop that does BMW cars and he said its not for certain but he thinks the timing chain tensioner rail broke. He said there is a service bulletin for timing chains and BMW might cover some of the labour. What do you guys think?

Does anyone ever use a simple OBD II code reader that spits on the 5 digit DTC (diagnostic trouble codes) that have 20 years of discussion about solutions anymore?

If you are using a code reader that spits out codes other than the FTP (federal test protocol) that created a standard across all automobile marks industry wide for when the CHECK ENG or SERV ENG SOON light come on...then the tool you used to retrieve these codes needs to be given so the forum will know which table of index to use in helping to determine the data.

BTW, the CHECK ENG or SERV ENG SOON warning light was created in 1996 to have an industry wide standard for EMISSIONS. The light doesn't illuminated for mechanical issues like timing chain...unless that issue also caused an emissions issue.

If you had a simple OBD II scanner that gave the 5 digit DTCs...you could simple type "BMW Pxxxx" into a google/internet search box to find 20 years of discussion/solutions/recommendations for that code.

what are the chances of timing chain affecting emissions though?
