Screw in sidewall - do I need to replace all 4 tires?
I have a 2011 E71 X6M (I'm posting in here because more traffic than the E71 specific forum )
I have a screw in the front passenger tire, in the sidewall, 3 shops said they won't plug/patch, I have to get new tires. The shop I'm getting tires from says I should do all 4 because doing 2 may ruin the center diff. These are snow tires 255/50/r19, if that makes a difference. Is this true? There's about 6mm tread on the effected tire, new they're 9mm, probably less on the backs because I like to have fun. |

I had the same thing last year...had to replace all 4. Transfer case is supposed to allow for small variance. You can try it, but maybe better off buying all 4. I’m still stuck with 3 used tires in the garage hoping (sort of) that I need them before they dry rot.

Would work if he had a square setup. Mine are staggered.

I just replaced one on my x5m. No issues with different tread depth on the tires. The cars are designed to tolerate some mismatch in size. Deal replaced my tire and said it should be no isssue. So far thousands of mile later they are right,
P.s. my front tires are a different brand, age then the rears. No issues. |

A hint. I have had discount tire give me all kinds of reasons why they could not replace just one tire. But if you bring in the wheel and a tire, they are more than happy to mount that tire for their normal mounting fees. So if you acquire the tire, either from them or ebay, and bring it in not on the car, they will do whatever you like.

In my experience, this has worked like a charm. Once on my X5M, and once on my Focus RS. Worst case, I figured it was worth risking ~$100 + mounting to see if things were fine. Found tires with manufacture dates +/- 6 months and 0.5/32nds of tread depth to old stuff still on the vehicle. As another suggested, I too have found independent shops very willing to replace with used rubber. |

+ 1 I have staggered setup. Front and rear tires of different brands. I have changed just a single tire many times. Its just a money grab tactic to ask for all tires replaced for a single puncture. You are not driving a Formula 1 race car which have milimeter tolerances. Road cars have very high tolerances. Don't fall for the tire dealer gimmick. Tell them to shut up and put a single tire . |

If we keep changing all four tires every time we get a non repairable puncture, we will have to open a used tire business in our garage. |

Haha, thanks. I was halfway through the tires and didn’t want to risk it. I have a good friend who swapped just his rear tires on his wife’s X3 and the transfer case grenaded. He had to buy a used one and swap it in and then buy 4 new tires.

I changed 2 tires when this happened to me, and the tread ware difference was causing my traction light to flash when I went over bumps on the road. Car seemed to be acting up with it.. Bit the bullet and changed the other 2. All is good. Rather not risk it over tires. Even worse. X5M tires are not cheap

You guys must have too much money to waste. The reason to replace all tires is because the outside diameter is different in a worn vs. a new tire. What happens when one tire pressure is a little low (not recommended, but happens)? That tire diameter is also smaller, I would think BMW system can handle small diameter differences with ease without causing damage or alter performance.

We have four family vehicles. If we replaced all four tires every time one of us has a puncture, we would have a used tire dealership on our hands LOL
