S63 X5M high pitched engine noise
Hi all, looking for some advice before I haul car off to indy to assess. After a light spirited boot down the highway my beloved s63 engine is making some strange noises. The car was warm when driven away and was not over hearing or low of fluids. I noticed the car was hunting at stand still and was starting to sound lumpy. Realising something was up I quickly headed home on the way the engine was sounding like birds chirping yep a strange high pitched chirping sound more evident at idle.
Upon retiring home and parking up the cel came on and so shut her off. Upon cold start up this is the sound to be heard. I checked turbos by taking off ducting and spinning up and they appear ok, I think it might be internal it’s not belts. Any ideas from this video guys? Cheers guys Aaron Last edited by OzX5M; 12-31-2018 at 11:02 PM.. Reason: Spelling |

Vacuum leak?
Check all the hoses going over the turbos and the lines on both banks. Recommend pulling the main vent hose (black corrugated) off and give it a light bend - if it hasn't been replaced since 2010, most likely this is your culprit.

Thank you twinsnails I hope to god this is what it is and will have to buy scanner to check. What further damage can occur from a faulty HPFP? Could damage be limited to just the pump in a hpfp failure ?

This is a common problem and there is a thread or two cropping up every month on this issue,
It’s most likely the engine vent pipe that’s turned crispy and is leaking. These fail all the time on this car, and will make it run rough if bad and whistle like this. https://www.xbimmers.com/forums/show....php?t=1413583 Replace all of them, they will disintegrate when you touch them. |

I was working on the turbo area and leant on the corrugated hose - noticed the noise and took the pipe off. Practically fell apart in my hands. Probably doesn't help with our weather + underhood temps during heavy use.

Better to replace all 3 hoses at once. I only replaced one, which made the screeching go away (the one that was severely cracked), and it worked for a few months, then the engine started to run rough again just recently... I'm going to replace the other 2 to fix it once and for all. But, how can I do it myself? They are easy to get at (the 2 on top of the engine), but those connectors look bizarre. How do you unhook them? |
