BMW X6 M expected to sell as well as M5

Makes sense to me since they both get the same MPG and the X6 is more practical.

BMW X6 M expected to sell as well as M5
Source: Pistonheads

The M version of BMW’s SUV/SAC models, X5 and X6, has been confirmed many times and they’re being tested as we speak, but no one really understood the reason behind the M version of these popular models.

In a recent interview with Auto Motor und Sport, the head of BMW’s M division, Herr Ludwig Willisch said that the reason behind the X6 M especially, are the strong sales generated by Mercedes-Benz with their AMG ML models and also Porsche’s Cayenne Turbo.

Herr Willish also said the BMW X5 M and X6 M are expected to match the sale of the popular M5 model.

With the new BMW X5 and X6 M models, the german automaker is expecting to generate large sales for their M division. While they will still be powered by BMW’s new 4.4L V8 twin-turbo engine, output is expected to be higher than the current 400bhp (298kW) and 450lb-ft (600Nm) torque in the xDrive50i.

The car will have larger intakes at the front and could make its debut early next year, said Willisch. It will also have a revised grille and new side mirrors.

He has also confirmed one more time when we already knew, there will be no BMW 1 Series M car nor an M3 Touring.

BMW has not publicly stated the official release date. The development of the car very far along. The educated guess is that the X6 "M" will be available in very late 09 as 2010 model. And yes it will be the real deal "Motorsport" BMW "M" brand.Based on these pic's from Motor Authority the X6 M does not have the traditional X6 fog lamps.Instead the row of white LED lights will somehow become the fog lamps. The black camoed area at the top of the front fender is believed to be the "M" vents or gills.Hope this helps. Thanks! I would sooo much rather have an M5 than this though. If I want performance, I don't want a tank of a car.

Even if the M version of the X6 is heavier, I would still buy the X6 over the M5.

When I decided to by the X6 xDrive50i, I was actually looking at either the 750 or the M5 and then decided to go with the X6. Simply because neither of the other two cars have all wheel drive capability!

In snow or rain, the X6 will leave the M5 in it's rear view mirror, especially once they are going to release an M version of the X6!

True, but there is something wrong when an SUV can keep up with an M5.

More and more it is no longer about the car model but the car technology.

Weight always dampens the fun. Even if the X6 is a smidge fast than the M5, I'd still take the 5.

Palbay, if this does come out 2009 Q4, that will be be scary for me...since I am really starting to look into the Gran Turismo 7 aka CS Cncept, which is due a mere 12 months or so from then...

I have yet to see another X6 in the UK, the M5 does not sell at all well here either, so the X6M will be very rare indeed here.

The CS is a long sports sedan. It will replace the 7 Series (not literally replace...just positioned above the 7 Series) as the topline auto for BMW.It just depends on what you are looking for.The X6 M will be a very nice ride....everything the current X6's bring to the table, but just more raw performance......better handling, faster straightline and skidpad numbers, better brakes,etc....I would still go w/ the X6 M if it were me....just hard to find another auto w/ such an awesome street presence.Just my opinion. Thanks! You obviously have not driven an X6 50i because it may be heavy but sure does not corner like it is heavy.

You've obviously never driven a car on a track or at 10/10ths. Weight kills everything at the edge. Even the M5/M6 felt "boring" in comparison to M Coupes at the M School.

I love the X6, but I don't see its point as anything but a technological showcase, a defiance against the laws of physics, and a sales-getter. It looks better than an M5, but it's not more practical. It has more trunk space, but one less seat. The X6 35i/50i are fast, but they're still SUVs any way you put it.

In general I agree with you, however the M5 is not a sports car either, it's a very sporty sedan. Now the M coupe, that's more like what I would consider a real sports car.

As for the X6, I think (more like hope) that the engineers at the M division are going to work on reducing the weight of the X6 by means of replacing regular parts with composite material parts, etc.

That combined with increased performance of the TTV8 and hopefully a lowered ride height, should make for one heck of a car!

Well, that's kind of the point, isn't it? We are talking of street use vehicles here, not race cars. Clearly one would buy each kind of vehicle using totally different parameters. Cars like the M5 and X6M are designed for everyday use but with an element of performance lacking in your typical runabout. Their track performance is irrelevant except for bragging rights and marketing purposes.

Touche, all very valid points. I see what you all mean. Let's hope the final product turns out to be a thriller.
