High mileage/100K X5M

Buddy who had a 2012 M with 15K mi says to pay more for less miles and one with a warranty. But I'm looking to be in the low-mid $30K range, so that's high mileage. It'll be my 2nd car so 2K miles in a year max. With the way they hold their value, or lack thereof, wouldn't want to spend all that much on one that's going to be rarely driven.

May I ask why you are buying an suv as a second or recreational car? Why not buy a sports car that just requires less maintenence?

If it's been well cared for I wouldn't worry to much. Those are likely to be all highway miles, so not much wear and tear.

I have a Vette now. Once that sells it'll be replaced with the X5M. I was looking at the M5, but the insurance is ridiculous. So I was looking at the M3. But I don't like the way the coupe looks. And I liked the X5M since I was helping my buddy find one and finally purchase it before he traded it in. The Carbon Black is a must for me. And black interior. Same HP as the V I had. 4 sec 0-60, mid-12's in the 1/4. Under $500 piggyback for more hp/low-12s in the 1/4. And AWD so I'm not sliding around like a high HP rwd car. Better question is... why not?

Does BMW have a database of documented service performed? My Passat I have now has a few records, but only the dealer has them and can see them. There is no database like GM has where any dealer can see what work was performed on it. Since Carfax and AutoCheck don't report every service.

Do you have any experience with BMW maintenance, specifically ///M versions? If not, then you should read up - you don't want to be caught off guard.

Yes, a dealer can (not sure they will want to) print out a complete history of work that was done at all BMW dealerships combined.

I'm curious...have you actually found an X5M with a 100k on it, or is this just hypothetical? Finding one may be easier said than done. You may have much better luck being in the 30s with an M3.

A BMW X5M with 100K miles and no warranty? Yowzerz. Just make sure you receive a FULL SERVICE HISTORY.

My previous vehicle was a 2004.5 Dodge Ram 2500. I sold it last year with 110K or so miles for an insane amount of money. What made it so valuable? It was extremely well taken care of and I had a binder of all the work that had been done. The gentlemen who was looking at it drove 15 hours to come see the truck actually inspected the binder overnight with a fine comb. The next day, he handed me $23K in cash and drove off into the sunset.

Moral of the story: if you know the full history of the vehicle and it's been well maintained, you don't need to worry.
