Going to X6 coming from sedan

Hello,

I have been reading a while on these forums. I currently drive an Audi A6 4.2 (sorry ) and I am looking for my next car. I am considering three cars: New 550i, used 2009 750i or used 2008 or 2009 x6 5.0 (they all fall approx within the same price range).

I love the way the X6 5.0 looks but I only had a short test drive so I do not have much seat time. I never had an SUV (the ones I drove always felt way too heavy and did not handle the way I like). I remember driving a friend 2006 Cayenne S for a week some years back (I considered buying the Cayenne) but I did not like it. I liked it for the first few days and then the novelty wore off. Based on the reviews I read, the X6 drives more like a car and handles very well. Anybody here was in the same situation than I was before they bought?

I would likely get it used (I found a 2008 almost fully loaded with 22K miles for 56K which seems resonable). Anything I need to be aware of, look out for before buying?

Thx.

I used to have 545i and didn't like suv at all I had fx45, then I test drove my sister's X6 and bought one for myself, I love my SUV it's like a sedan but lifted and awd. Get an X6 you won't regret especially with 4.4 bi turbo

x6 definitely drives better than your standard SUV. I agree with you on Cayenne, a friend of mine just got a new Cayenne S (v8) and compared to x6 or x5 it just doesn't drive as well. I was actually disappointed as I expected more from a Porsche.

Never looked back since. A coupe with a high driving position. My only niggle is the run flats. Love it!!

JUst bought an X6M, coming from a 535i dinan stage 2 running 19 inch rubber. THis thing handles better than the 5. Power is plentiful in whatever trim, but its the handling that blows you away. You will still feel the heft, but only at the limit. Cannot wait for the breakin period to be over so I can really go at it. I however do hate the runflats!!

THere is a long corner near my house that I used to test the handling. 2009 Aston Martin v8 versus 2011X6M. 1 km 2nd and 3 rd gear (3rd gear bmw as cannot rev beyond 5000rpms for now).

88 km/h AMV8
95 km/h X6M

I could have probably done better, but still not used to the vehicles weight. I will update next month.

In short, this isn't a sports car, but it handles like one

It is a bit of a polarizing car and definitively not a "reasonable alternative". Reading magazine reviews, it looks like most people do not see a point in the car and some actually hate it. It is not like a sport car, does not have the utility of an SUV, is expensive and consumes fuel like a suburban. I half expect people to throw rocks at me for getting such a car.

Yet, I am still seriously considering getting one. What is going on?

More serious question though, are the x6 expected to drop in value like a rock (I would be buying used - I almost always do) but I have seen high end cars drop easily 10K+ per year even after 2 years.

Thx.

Just like everything else, you going to have to decide for yourself if it is worth it or practical enough for you now and 2 years from now. Like everything else in life we get used to things or just get plain bored of it.
I see real beauty in this automobile both in how it looks and its technology. I never thought that I would like a SUV or All wheel drive. I have driven only one car for the last 8 years in one rendition or the other..and that was a 5 series. Only because I couldn't find something worthy to make me change.

Now I drive an X6!

You can also look at the BMW residuals for leases to get an idea. I think x6 will hold it's value ok but probaby not as well as an x5. This is a limited production car and given polarizing views of the public will probably have a pretty bad resale value. x6M has a 29% 5-year residual which is really bad if you ask me. Yet I think it's a great car and I would consider keeping it for 5_ years.

I enjoy my new X6, little complaints and drives nicer than my Audi. I hope dinan comes out with a tune, I wouldn't mind an extra 70+ HP and some more torque.
