X5 35D Reliablity

Hello, I'm just curious as to what to know about the 2011-2013 x5 diesel reliability. Is it worse or better than the 35i model and also I heard around the community that there are emissions deletes and things like that to increase reliability.

ps: I live in Ontario so they only do emissions testing for trucks

Maintenance = Reliability

they are NOT reliable without regular maintenance.

The deletes do help the reliability, but there is alot to do for maintenance to make sure its safe to max out the fuel system with the deletes + tune


I'm from Alberta, so we have no emissions laws.

First of all the e70 x5 has all kinds of reliability issues not related to the engines.

Overall I’d say the diesels tie for least reliable engine option for an x5 maybe the n63 is just almost as bad. Having owned a 4.8i and s63. If you have to keep the emissions in place, be prepared to spend a lot of money doing so. If you can delete them, be prepared to spend a lot of money doing so. Then you’ll just have the regular Diesel engine problems. Turbo oil line leaks, harmonic balancer failures, engine tstat, red boost hose, engine mounts, glow plugs, glow plug module, carbon build up, vacuum lines, PCV leaking, I’ve done all of those. Sensor failures, mine cracked it’s egr cooler 4 times, maf sensors. Basically it’s a fun engine that’s like a bipolar cheerleader. A lot of fun when she’s up, really bad when she’s down, and you won’t miss her when the relationship is done. But I still shed a tear for her ever now and then, my 335d.

I would own one again, but it’s not a money saving option. The newer f15 diesels seem to be far less troublesome.
