Question RPM surge at idle + smoke

I'm wondering if this is related to valve steam seals?

Usually once the hybrid battery is depleted on my E72, the engine kicks in and the RPM surges to about 800-900 and i'll get a nice cloud of smoke. This lasts for a minute or two before the idle backs down and the smoke is gone. Does this sound like valve stem seals? I guess its possible the RPM surges to charge up the hybrid battery but thats just my guess, I dont know.

I dont have excessive oil consumption, my last oil service was 6 months ago and I've driven about 3500 kilometers since. The oil reading is still 100% full.

I dont think i qualify for the SIB regarding the excess smoke/excess oil consumption since I have a 2010 with a build date of late 2009.

Thoughts?
