took to dealer at 44K with broken pieces stowed in cargo area. Still under maint & warranty.
They replaced parts including heat shields which were covered with melted plastic. |

My car just went out of warranty, and I ended up with broken bulkhead covers. Dealer wants $600, parts and labor - I'm trying to see if it can be good willed, but am not too hopeful. If its an easy job (sounds like it is), id probably do it myself. What is the right tool (if you don't mind saying)?

Just thought i will chip in, the smell is from the motor oil spill on your engine, when the guys went to look for a problem they probably spilled some oil and that is what causing the smell, happened to my x6 sometime ago when they had to change one of the solenoids. It appears out of nowhere, lasts for few days and vanishes when the oild is fully burned.

Burning plastic smell
I've had a burning plastic smell in my 2010 X for almost a year now. Took it to 2 different local dealers and they had no clue. I decided to check out the xbimmer forum and I do believe user "theonesupreme' has provided a solution. I checked under the hood and the heat shield (plastic divider with weather stripping near the back) was cracked, brittle, with sections missing and lying on a surface that was very hot. I got a little closer to take a sniff and found that it had the exact smell that I've smelled over the past year. I noted the part#'s from previous postings. I'd like to DIY but I need the I just need instructions the 'theonesupreme' provided to a previous user (bmwx5er). I would really appreciate it if you could also provide to me.....if you don't mind.

Opened up the trunk fully expecting to see the partition issue, but rather saw this. Looks like turbo coolant lines leaking. Wish it was the partitions.
