Usually a proprietary OS, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was something like VxWorks or similar OS. It for SURE isn't MS based!

First gen iDrive in the 2001 7 series was based on Windows.

Second Gen is based on vxWorks which is kind of like a UNIX based real time operating system.

I am not sure what the third gen is using.

This article states the new iDrive is the 4th gen which I don't agree with.

http://stage.bmwcca.org/forum/showthread.php?t=3284

It states the difference between the second an third gen is the favorites buttons which I find dumb. That is not enough to call it a generation newer. So I consider there to be three major revisions.

Also, I would barely call the new iDrive a generation change. The changed the menu and put the software on a hard disc. But you still cannot say "find the nearest starbucks" for example which is available in a $18k Ford. So I see the 4th gen, if you can call it that to be more of a marketing release where very little R&D has occured and the Nav is the same as before from a functional input standpoint.
Don't get me wrong, I like idrive but the changes and improvements come ever so slowly.

I agree my daughters Accura takes voice commands, I'm not really interested in a new menu I want to be able to tell it to do stuff.
