Advice on salary negotiation
Long story short, my company is relocating to another state (chicago suburb to boca raton), was asked to move with a promotion and a raise of 10%. Asked 25% expecting a counter of 15% or 20%, if lucky. Was told 10% is it and not negotiable. 10% puts me at not-too-bad, not-too-good range.
Am I done negotiating? (Relocation is provided by the company, cost of living is probably a couple of % higher in boca) Last edited by Dougeefresh; 01-28-2015 at 11:14 PM.. |

10% promo to relocate? I don't know about that. I got 10.5% just moving up a level. A guy I know relocated and received a nice relocation package and raise. So unless you want to stay with the company or don't mind moving, why not apply elsewhere? Other companies may pay more.

Relocation package is not bad. The promo is a separate issue.
The question at hand is whether I can push for more after being told that they will not negotiate. |

Well, depending on your wages, 10% isn't exactly that much a difference; it's just barely padding on cost of living... Like even $5,000 a month salary is a transition to $500 more to offset perhaps $200 more in living expenses, so netting $300 more (minus whatever bite Uncle Sam wants to take out of it) isn't exactly impressive. Try testing the waters with other companies.

Never been to Chicago, but I find it odd that the cost of living would be more in Boca. Not to mention just one or two exists away from Boca you could get cheaper housing than in Boca.

Honestly, I'd say take what they give you. If you can do better on your own somewhere else, by all means go for it. If not, take their offer with a smile and bells on. The job market is so horrific for decent paying jobs, you'd be nuts to move on to something else without a replacement lined up.

Find things in the contract that you would like changed. ex. days vacation, days paid out if let go. Those are more valuable than a few extra $K per year. They don't cost the company anything in the short term, which is how all companies think anyways.

Personally we went thru a restructing at work 18 months ago and I had to present that to my employees. It was similar want your job with the new company this is what is offered (now it was not attractive and was basically a cut because we lost a sick day and one floating holiday and if on MBO's it was a 5% cut on those). Had quite a few counter the offer and HR told me to tell them they are no longer needed here's your package. With that said if they told you that was it and you counter they might do the same and I have some old employees a year later still out of work because we were all over paid and the stigma of being riffed(or so they claim). Be careful on countering is my sentiment.

If it's non-negotiable, it's non-negotiable. What you could do, though, is look up the cost of living differences between here and there. If it's 10% higher down there, present that to your manager stating that there's no raise comparatively speaking.

Thats not what the cost of living calculators say. As someone who grew up in Florida, I can nearly assure across the board that it is one of the cheapest places to live.

Personally wouldn't relocate out of where I am in the Bay Area no matter what, but hey...that's just me.
Tell them to kick rocks. Find a new company. Biggest jumps in pay during your career are when you switch companies, not from raises. Find another job locally that will pay you 25% more. |

Maybe where you live.
The job market right now puts all the power in the employees hands. I can't hire 3-5 year engineers fast enough at $160K. It's so bad that we even have $10K finder's feess for about 15 different engineering/management positions. |

97 million Americans out of the labor force and a record low participation rate tells me it's bad, very, very bad. Obviously it won't be the same story everywhere and for all jobs across the spectrum. As a whole, the jobs situation in this country is damaged beyond repair from 2007-2008 and is not coming back.

You know your company/boss better than anyone on here. Do you think there is more room? Also depends on what you do and how replaceable you are. South Florida is a big job market so chances are they can find someone to do what you do.
