Rear brake light confused?

I had a brake light sensor come on "right brake light failure" looked at bulb adn didnt seem blown. assumes it was socket. i tinkered with socket to get it to make a better contact but to no avail Didnt work. For shits and giggles I moved the right socket to left and vice versa. low and behold left side brrake light failure. Aha, must be the socket. Bought a new socket, and tried it out, didnt work still left brake light failure. Bought a new bulb, still left brake light failure. checked all the bulbs in left and all look good. Am I missing something?

Before I even look, I always assume it’s a ground issue. Sounds like the socket and/or harness from it have a fault. Before I’d buy a new one, check for proper voltage at the power line and check also that the ground line to the harness is true. Once this done and both of these are good, confirmation of socket issue exists.

Do any of your rear bulbs have a dual filament? If they do...make sure BOTH filaments are intact. If one of them is not intact...this could cause the warning. And this could be cause by several of the rear tail light bulbs since the LCM will substitute a bulb to use as a brake light if the brake light bulb fails.

And since the LCM can also limit output...if you have dual filament bulbs (one low watt and one higher watt filament)...the LCM can use another bulb to use as a rear tail light or use as a rear brake light...so if one of the filaments is burnt out, you can get a warning message.

pulled the taillight out. I added some solder to the housing where the sockets go. just to make sure the tabs on the sockets at hitting the brake light housing. didnt solve problem.
I pulled out my Foxwell and did a scan. 6 faults
FRM: Taillight left 2. MINI Side marker light from left rear right faulty
FRM : MINI side marker light at front right or rear left faulty
FRM: Brake light right Faulty
FRM: BRake light Left Faulty
FRM: Short Circuit fail

QSilver7 - I dont know if my bulbs are double filament. The new ones I have are not so could that be the problem of all this?

It looks like the bulbs are single filament.
The brake light and the dynamic brake light are grounded in series.

I have had old still functioning bulbs give an intermittent failure warning before. The bulb element was visibly deteriorated so I changed it anyways and warning went away. When you moved the socket did you move the bulb as well? Perhaps the one side has a little more resistance, and combined with a failing bulb, sets the warning.

Good luck!

Good news and Bad. Fed up with this issue and as much as I hate doing it , I took it to my local mechanic. My regular guy was booked and i read on a local (nextdoor) site that this other local mechanic does very good work, so I went to him. He fit me in ASAP and looked over the light immediately. Apparently my trailer hitch lighting module crapped out and thats whats causing the issue. Thats the bad news. The good news is its under warranty so I got a new one coming (thanks etrailer), and the other good news is my new local mechanic didnt charge me a dime for the diagnostic check Winner Winner

Well short lived good news I removed my trailer lighting device. Now nothing is connected and it's as if the car never had the lights. But fault is still there.
