Break pad and rooters
Hi All,
I am hoping I can get a good advice here regarding to my brake change. I have a 2011 BMW X5 , I was at the dealer last week doing an oil change and they did a check on the car and they told me I need to replace the pads ,rooters and sensors on all 4 tires and they gave a quote for that job which was $2200. I looked online at different websites to buy the brakes component and they were way much cheaper than do it at the dealer but its not a BMW parts. So I was wondering do you recommend me doing that or stick with the dealer's quote and just pay $2200 and get it done there. its too much and I know you have to pay that if you own a BMW Any advise is highly appreciated. Regards, |

I bought rotors and pads from them before when I had 2011 X5, they were way cheaper and lasted long time. I also did install myself, so no labor charges good luck! |

I'd find some oem parts from RockAuto or ECS tuning. Don't buy the cheapest aftermarket parts.
Other then that you'll be just fine, I've used Centric parts on lots of cars, buy the Centric premium or similar. |

$2200 thats 60-70% of the way to the factory brembo. Ouch.
I just bought an X5 and they tried to sell me the maint package that included brakes. I haven't paid anyone to do brakes on my cars is 20+ years. Modern brakes are just so easy to do. If it's not time to flush the fluid, 3 hours max for a whole car including rotors. That's moving at a snails pace.

if you have the time, do it yourself . its not hard to do. just research and have all the tools and parts first, then set aside a good 6-8 hours to do all 4. only 1 sensor for front and 1 for rear .

Good lawd. Thats why they are stealerships. On pretty much all cars , brakes are brakes. A couple of bolts for the calipers and brackets, bolt for the rotors and compress the pistons. No reason for a brake job to cost this. Ecs has oem pads and rotors for much cheaper or better aftermarket parts for the same price or slightly lower.

Don't ever, EVER, have stealerships work on your car outside of warranty service. If you can't DIY, find a competent independent mechanic to do the work. There's nothing better AT ALL about service done at a stealership.

Stealership quoted me $870 CAD for rear brake job. Got my fronts done (pads+rotor+sensor+one and half hr labour) for about $620 at the modification shop thats actually owned by the dealership. Was able to get rear brake pads for 50USD and rotors for 130USD off Amazon then picked up across the border. Paid about 80 bucks an hr at a shop that specializes in BMWs. Basically got my rear brakes done for 300 or so.

Maybe the model info shows up on the full version, but I am on my phone. If this is an X5M then that is not too terrible of a price.
As others have said though, disc brakes on modern cars are pretty easy. Especially if replacing rotors and pads. If just replacing pads then rotors have to be machined flat with special tools (a lathe). However, replacing rotors, pads, and sensors can be done with a jack, jack stands (for safety) and basic hand tools. Air tools are helpful, but not required. |

A vast portion of vehicle owners these days live in condos, with no garages, own no tools, or have no experience, or desire to do this themselves. This is why many don't do brake jobs on their own. It's nice that we encourage it, but its just out of the realm for SO many ppl. And why Stealerships make the money they do.
I'd recommend asking a "gearhead" friend for help if possible, one with garage and tools. You can even assist him with the comfort of having a more experienced mechanic by your side, and they will usually work for beer/pizza.

This is true, as brakes are one of the easiest jobs by someone who knows what they're doing. I think putting the car on jack stands and taking off the wheels is probably the lion's share of the work.

I really appreciate all your response. I wasn't able to locate where I can find the Centric premium parts. I was able to find those and I was wondering what you guys think about it?

Your paying $100 more for the rotors to be black edged which will be nice because it wont show rust as easily, both options look equivalent, I have done brakes on every car i've owned for 30 years and actually like doing it. GO with the 1st option to eliminate the rust look, my 2 cents.

Actually the price difference is $40, because the second option charge you for the shipping about $40 but the first one included in the price. What you think material wise,do you think Carbon Fiber and Ceramic compound for the pads better than Ceramic Premium ?

I just found that for X5 its more recommended to use the regular rooters not slotted nor drilled, I did some research and they all recommended for heavy cars its better to use the regular rooters.

Low dusting pads Low noise pads High performance/high heat tolerance A typical pad only can perform 2 of the 3 above characteristics. A Ceramic pad is low maintenance, low dusting (typically), and low noise. It's recommended for a daily driver. You'd step up to a higher performing pad like a "semi-metallic," pad which would dust more, might squeak, but handle towing and downhill stuff better. My vote goes for Ceramic in most cases, unless your requirements require something else. Quote:
Just get a Centric Premium rotor. That's an actual brand and model of rotor. It's a quality iron, from a very large manufacturer of brakes, with a painted center hat to prevent rust. It's also super affordable. If you're really on a budget, just get the standard Centric rotor. It just doesn't have the painted hat. |
