X5M- Aftermarket Wheel Questions

1. Has anyone had issues using hub rings on rear wheels with 74.1 mm bore? More specifically, do the wheels stay centered and balanced? Wondering how effective the solution is for overcoming the 72.6 mm hub dilemma with a replacement set of wheels.
   
2. If I were to go with 22" aftermarket wheels, the Pirelli Scorpion Zero rears are difficult to come by. I can easily find the fronts (295/30R22) for <$200 but the rears (335/25R22) are either non-available (at least at discount tire and tire rack) or at unknown shops for >$500. Are the rears really that more expensive than the fronts?

I have. I did a conversion of 74 to 72.56 on my old 4.4i. As long as you have the right quality rings, there are no issues.

as a reminder, you need to inform the dealership or anyone who is touching the car that you have these rings, my dealer took mine off and threw them out once

Ditto Naz24...a good set of hub centric rings isnt' an issue...its not informing anyone that has to remove the wheel that hub centric rings are installed.

Sometimes depending on the material they are made of along with the road conditions you drive on etc...the ring may come off with the wheel or sometimes it may stay on the hub. If the person removing the wheel doesn't know that they are there...they could easily get lost or damaged.

Toyo: I had the previous gen ST-II on my X5 and had lots of luck with them, good grip, great wear, low road noise (until they wore down), and general good looks. These are ALL SEASON tires, my buddy made it through Ithaca winters with these on his 4.8is

VREDESTEIN: also makes a tire, don't be fooled by their name, they are a great tire manufacturer very popular in Europe. Detailers Domain, etc carry these tires and install them on their own cars. I also had a set of these on my X5 and enjoyed them. I'll probably end up replacing my Bridgestones with the Ultrac Vorti when the time comes, These are SUMMER TIRES. see below:

Thanks! I was also considering the Toyos but hadnt seen any reviews posted for the STIII. The aggressive tread pattern was concerning initially for road noise.

If you don't need all-seasons, go with the Vreds.

I had lots of luck on the ST-IIs, road noise wasnt bad until they hit about 30% tread life, then they were almost unbearable. But that was at 25k miles on em.

Looked up the Vreds and they are OOS in our sizes. Would've preferred the summers over the all seasons too!

That's a shame. I'd look up a local Vred dealer and see if they can get em.

Good luck regardless, the Toyos are good tires and for half the price, definitely a big consideration

I have driven the toyos stiii for about 5k miles now with no complaints, 0 noise and great in the snow and the sidewall looks great

Flame suit on for those who preach "you've got a $100k car"...

I've been looking at Atturo AZ850 tires only because they've gotten great reviews on the Cherokee SRT8 forums...basically a truck that's known to be our competition. I don't know why they're so popular in the Dodge community, but there's videos all over YouTube from just about every Dodge model out that saying how much they like them in ranges from 20's to 22's.

Prior to the X5M I had an E53 4.4 X5 that came with iForged 20's wrapped in Lexani LX4000 tires, they were OK and survived hard driving to Bimmerfest (Seattle to Hollywood to Vegas and back to Seattle) but I didn't like their soft sidewalls...the tires almost looked low in pressure in the front if I parked with the wheels turned because the sidewalls would deform. They also tended to feel like they developed flat spots if parked for more than a few days but it would go away after being warmed up. I'm sure that model is no longer available so I can only assume/hope they've since upgraded.

Last time I bought a set of the Pirellis was for my Harley Davidson F150 that sits on the same spec 22's as my X5M, but that was almost two years ago when I got all 4 for $1100 shipped...nowadays it's almost double that! I was so shocked by the price jump that I took the rears off the Harley and put them onto the X5M hoping maybe their price bubble would burst...no such luck. That's absurd considering how they're going to be used (DD straight line street queen) and it's not like the Pirellis have been the best tire for me either...blew through a set of rears after only a year on the X5M, one front tire seems to have split where the sidewall meets the tread...leaks just enough to require air every couple of weeks, yet close enough to the sidewall that tire places won't apply a patch so basically I'm throwing them both away while still having plenty of life :/

Let's be real...a truck on 22's isn't meant for track performance driving anyways, it's for cruising the streets. I also don't cruise parking lots checking for tire brands and then judging people either. Even if the Atturo tires last as long as the Pirellis and don't exhibit the flatspot/soft sidewalls of the Lexani, I'll be happy as they got the same job done without spending 4x as much. Considering their price differences, they're cheap enough to try.

600hp pickup with no weight in the bed might have contributed to it, but my Harley Davidson F150 had the first gen Proxes S/T on the stock 20's and they sucked...I mean ZERO wet traction and almost the same in the dry. Thankfully tires get better with time.
