Check engine light P2402

I wanted to see if anyone had this happen to their xdrive50i. I have a 2012 e70 n63 and recently started to see this cel come and go. Wanted to see if anyone has had to change a gas cap or go in and change any other parts.

Car just hit 146k.

Did you google BMW obdii P2402? I only ask because I'm not sure what a gas cap has to do with the DTC (diagnostic trouble code).

The OBD II system (the check engine light) illuminates when one of the MANY sensors that track emissions illluminates. So to boil down everything to the gas cap is a big misconception. The emissions system is affected by lots of systems around the vehicle. And with new technology...even things like BMW's active front grills can trigger a CEL since they affect air intake into the engine...which can affect emissions.

BTW, a bad or loose gas cap is P0457.

OBD II codes are standard across all car manufacturers...that was the reason for the 1996 federal mandate. You don't need to find a post on a BMW e70 forum to find out what causes this DTC...the fault will mean the same thing for every car built since 1996.

I suggest again...just type BMW OBD II P2402 into a google/internet search box and you'll get many results that will reveal what that code is and what caused it and possible solutions.

Break Down of a DTC:

Take note of the 3rd & 4th bullets in the info below:

Again, the USA mandated OBD II standard be in place starting with the 1996 model year...in some other countries, compliance came later:
