Low Coolant Warning

2012 X5 50i Coolant Warning light came on this morning. Had the vehicle for 3 weeks now. I aware of the 50i burning oil, however is low coolant abnormal for this engine which can be other issues?

Thanks

Any pooling of fluid underneath where you park; both home and work?

Could be one of a few things

1) Cracked coolant tank
2) Leaking coolant hose (often the turbo hoses need to be replaced)
3) Improperly closed top (check that the dots align between the top and the coolant tank.

^^^ what he said. Coolant shouldn't vanish, it's a "lifetime" fluid according to bmw. I'd have it checked asap.

For the past few mornings when I start the car, the low coolant warning light comes on, if I turn car off and restart no warning light, the rest of the day light never comes on again , only on the first start of the day.

Same happened to my 35i X5 11 with 31k miles. Mine leaked coolant on the bottom. Took it to the dealer where I bought it from said they'll call me in the middle of next week stating what's wrong.

Smelling coolant inside of vehicle and windshield tends to fog up from the inside. What could be loose?

Thanks

A few months ago I had a small leak on top of the engine. It was one of the lines underneath the top engine cover that's part of the turbo cooling, where the metal pipes meet the rubber hoses. It would drip one drop at a time every once in a while and the smell would enter the cabin. It never resulted in a low coolant light though as I only needed to tighten the OEM clamp. I was able to identify which one was leaking as the coolant would dry as a white-ish powder around the pipe connection and below where it was dripping on the hot engine block.

Is the smell in the cabin persistent? I would check to see if your carpets are dry underneath the dash on both sides. If they are wet, it could be your heater core leaking.

Hope this helps, good luck.
