Interested in picking up an X6. Have some questions MPG/Options/Y2Y changes/etc

So I am currently in a Lexus IS250 and am at a point in my life where I want something with a little more power (not hard to do) and the ability to haul a little more stuff and also maybe even trailer some.

I've been looking at the X5 and X6 but it seems like the X6 might get me closer to that sports car feel. At one point I was going to try to make a C63/M3 work and drive my beater tahoe when needed, but I think a nice SUV (or should I say SAV) is a little more practical for me.

I have done a bit of searching over the past month and is it expected to get 13 MPG in the city and 18MPG on the highway with the 50i?

Also, when I am looking at these on cars.com /autotrader/etc is there really any way for me to pin down the option packages they might have? Can I somehow decode the vin to tell what packages they have? For instance performance package. How would I know if it had that package installed even if I were in the presence of it?

Oh, and year to year changes. I wasn't really able to find much information on that. Is a 2009 just as good as a 2011 with the same mileage? I did see that in 2013 with the X6 there's a small facelift but other than that not much information available.

I have seen someone on the forums with the ability to decode a VIN into the color/options for a car. I can't remember exactly where or how long, though; hopefully you can search for him in here.

I had a 2009 50i and got 12-13 MPG city and 18-20 MPG highway.

You definitely want a 2010 or newer X6. In 2010, BMW changed the iDrive computer significantly. The 2009 one had a low-res backup camera, low-res DVD-based maps, and was incredibly slow to "boot up" when starting the car; the 2010+ iDrives in X6 have much better cameras, hard-drive based maps, and more speed and functionality. The change in iDrive was a huge reason why I upgraded from a 2009 50i to a 2012 M (well, the extra power didn't hurt either).

I think there were additional changes in 2013, but they were mostly cosmetic refreshes to the headlights, taillights, and such. I'm not aware of any substantive changes to the engine, transmission, suspension, electronics, etc.

Need to register but it is free and lists all options in the car (just checked on my own car) as long as you have last 7 digits of the VIN.

In the 50i, I'm getting about 14 in PURE city and 24 in PURE highway. I've had 35i X5s as loners and got about 16 in PURE city (same as my 1M, strange ).

BigBobDeuce - is correct - you don't want a 2009 or earlier - the backup camera (a necessity in this truck) does not work very well. Oh and the 2010s could be had with the factory perf package.

As for options, just call the local dealer and ask them to look up the VIN for you. If your dealer won't do that, PM me and I will put you in touch with someone who will.

Nice. I'm not expecting great MPG but 14/24 is great.

I'm in Arkansas where there's not a lot of stop and wait traffic... None actually. So I am sure that makes it even better.

I have yet to drive a x6 but a x5/q7 many of times. I figured the visibility backing up was bad but it's that bad to make a 2010 necessary? Either way, done! I will keep that in mind.

What package do the vented seats come in? I opted out in my IS because it came with an awful lexus wood grain but that is something I would like in the 6.

Is the performance package worth the hunt or is a Dinan tune an override on that?

Well, it is important to remember that the 2011+ got the 8 speed trans and a 2MPG increase (BigBob's X6 had the 6 speed auto). Thus it (the 2011/2012) also lost the factory performance package available in 2010 (it reappeared in 2013 as the M Performance Package).

The ventilated seats are part of the luxury seating package in 2013. I forget what they were part of in 2012 and have no clue about the 2011). Unfortunately they are basically worthless - they blow cabin air only, not heated or cooled - so on a hot day like today, I have to wait until my interior is cooled down before turning them on otherwise, I get warm air blown on me. Not good when the temp is 100+ inside the car. My point being - if you find a car with them, great, but don't make it a required option.

Last but not least, I think a factory performance option always trumps Dinan. You can get a BMW extended warranty on the factory one and if you are keeping the truck past the warranty, that is a good idea!

Interesting. Thanks for the great info.

So what are your thoughts on the 8 speed vs 6 speed? Is it mainly a gas mileage thing?

Ugh!
My X6 (as do others) drags to a stop. I'm not sure if it is the brake energy regen, the 8 speed auto, or what. It annoys the crap out of me and no, after two years, I'm still not used to it. From say 15 mph my X6 will drag itself to a stop without me even putting my foot on the brake - the single thing I hate most about this truck!

Some have said the X6M does the same thing (and that has the 6 speed auto). I do know that the 2012 X5 30i loaner I had the other day did NOT do it (and it obviously had the 8 speed auto). So no clue if it is the trans or what - but make sure you test drive.

I should note that from a stop, it is a very seamless trans and enjoyable while accelerating. It is just the decel that is unpleasant
