Looking at Buying a Used E70 X5 4.8L

Im in the market to purchase a second car. I currently have the 435msport and am looking to buy something relatively cheap to keep the miles off my 435. I drive at least 25K miles per year.

I went and checked out a 2008 X5 4.8L with 99K miles. The car is listed at $9,995 and is at a used car lot; i know the owner.

Here is what is wrong with the car:
1) needs new radio because it keeps cycling the boot menu for Idrive.
2) The electric trunk is broken and I believe its one of the arms. I can hear the motor click when i push the button.
3) There is a CEL for crankshift position sensor; who knows what this is for..
4) the brake pads seems pretty damn low and there is a clunk on the initial bite. Rotors arent exactly smooth.

His mechanic is supposed to be checking the car out this weekend. What should be looked for? I hope it gets put on a lift and checked for leaks and what not...

Other than that, everything else is minor. The exterior is in really good shape as in the interior. There is one scrape on front bumper and the drivers seat cushion needs replacement or refurbishment.

With all that being said, what price should I offer to get this done? What if he fixes all of these items, what should i shoot for?

Are these cars very problematic and would it be wise to avoid all together?
Please let me know.

It’s often said, if you want to know about a car, don’t ask the owner (or his/her employs). In this case, it depends on how much the lot owner values your acquaintance. If you’re not close, you may want your own mechanic look it over.

I only know him because he facilitated the out-of-state deal on my 435. Should I pay a dealer to look it over? Not sure I want to piss away $250 for an inspection on a cheap used car. I know I could get it running good and fixed up, enough money can solve the problems, but I dont want to do that.

If you have a nearby mechanic (not necessarily a dealer) who can look it over for you for a couple hundred bucks, which should include putting it on a lift and a scan, it may be money very well spent. Things can get expensive very quickly on an older BMW. This could be a good purchase, but go in with your eyes wide open so you can budget for repairs.

What if I got it for $8K and had to fix the radio, trunk, and engine light for $1K + another $1K for tints, brakes, and small touches?

I really want to know how reliable the 4.8L is...

Also just found one that is loaded.
135K miles, listed at 10.5, negotiable.
grey, m sport, 4.8L, new suspension, brakes, tires, 7000$ of engine work, clean body and exterior.

I may go for this one.

Edit: just drove this one and man does it drive well! Its in really good shape and alot of maintenance has been performed on it. My only worry is the mileage. Is it too high?

If you are looking for something cheap to put miles on you should consider something else.

That said I would look at the repairs for the valve stem repair. Seems like most V8's will need it or should have had it by now.

I'd rather buy a car with lots of new parts over one with issues.

I'm seeing a lot of 2011 X5 35i listings for around 15-17k I would personally much rather spend a few thousand more and get a typically more reliable car and very much more efficient

I have sinced moved on after doing more research. The 4.8 is expensive to work on. Im better off buying a used 328/335 with less miles.
