Common issues in the 2012 X5 35i

Looking at purchasing for my wife, found a nice white msport black interior. What should I look for maintenance wise on these is there anything major? This one has 65,000 miles.

N55 can or will have leaking oil filter housing, valve cover gasket and oil pan gasket. Otherwise pretty solid!

Don't think the HPFP was an issue on the N55, Now the N54 on the other hand!!!! .

Your probably right. Though I think the breakthrough came in 2012 as that was the year the problems stopped or became a lot less of a thing, probably why it's tied to the n54 so much.

Valve cover gasket, front shaft recall performed, hpfp, and oil filter housing on my 2011 have been my only issues so far. Other than that, it's pretty solid as someone has mentioned previously.

No issues on my '11 35i SAV. Driveshaft recall done and water pump (proactively) replaced under warranty @ 48k miles. That's it. Great SUV. Currently at 55k.

Just had my water pump die. 2012 X5 35i 81k miles. Wish I had proactively changed it out.

Makes me wonder how much life mine has as I'm at 130k miles now and it's an early 2012!

Luckily mine died 2 miles from home and just parked it in a residential neighborhood. Towed it to the shop the next day and got it fixed. It is one of those things that will leave you stranded so I would change it out so its not a surprise. I will doing mine DIY in 4 years or 50k miles to avoid this.

Also I should note my car is a 4 zone climate control (rear passengers have their own climate dial) and that water pump is different (has more plastic) than the non-4 zone X5's.

man, give your dealer a happy face sticker and a gold star sticker, how did you manage a proactive repair on a water pump??

I wonder if this is also true of the V8s. I don't know if the 6's have the same setup, the the HVAC system has its own electric pump on the n63's

It was something they just decided to do as I approached the end of the factory warranty. Obviously, I had no complaints. As with many dealerships, they managed to screw up the relationship with the following appointment, so they are only as good as their most recent servicing. I've been going to an Indy since.

Some extra info, the night before the water pump died I was in the drive thru line at in-n-out and the car was squeaking pretty loud while idling. Never heard the noise before that night. It went away after we got our food and drove off. Thought it was the belt tensioner but I think it was related to the water pump. Maybe the belt was fine but the electric water pump was the thing squeaking. Anyways, pointing it out in case you hear squeaking, might be the water pump on its last legs.

Also like others, the night the WP dies the radiator fan was super loud. So listen for that too.

Same here. Water pump went out at 55k miles. Was a fairly expensive repair at the time but haven't had any issues since then. Now at 75k miles, 1 owner car.
