X5M diagnostic issues

So my 2011 X5M has been showing all the classic signs of bad injectors - soot on the rear bumper, CEL and limp mode with increasing regularity, reduced fuel economy, etc.

It's at the dealer for diagnosis today, and they say of the 21 faults stored, none related to the injectors. Instead, they tell me 3 things are going on - It needs new intake camshaft sensors, new spark plugs, and new valve cover gaskets, as they are both leaking oil.

Does this make sense to anyone more mechanically inclined than me? Does this explain the symptoms I have been experiencing?

my check engine just went on a couple weeks back and i am in limp mode. makes me sad. may have the same issue - will let you know. Got a lot of rough idling a few times and then it would go away...but then last bought brought out the doom light and the limp mode.

Just had all 8 injectors and plugs replaced with no fault codes. Only two of my injectors were bad but I insisted they replace them all as the last thing I wanted to do was come back in a week later. Tell them about the long cranking as they told me that was the symptom they needed to hear and duplicate to look at them without codes.

It seems to me they are relying on the fault based problems as the reason for your driveability problems at the moment. If they replace your plugs and the injectors are faulty, they will have to replace the plugs again so use that to get them to look while they are in there.

Good luck!

I have had episodic rough idle as well, always resulting in it going into limp mode. Shut it off, let it sit for 10 seconds, and then restart. That has usually resolved the limp mode problem. Lately, even that didn't fix it, as it would go back into limp mode within a couple miles. After it going into limp mode a couple times, upon restarting I hit the M button - I don't know whether it is related in any fashion, but both times I have done it it avoided going back into limp mode.

I will see if that works on them. Thanks for the input.

No problem. Can also try common sense reasoning with your sa along the lines of only car, daily driver, hassle of bringing it back, need a loaner a second time, etc. It does both of you guys no favors to have to come back because they didn't want to look the first time.
