Extended Warranty report for my 2010 X6M (fully optioned)
A heads up for the forum...
I purchased a used 2010 X6M in June, 2012 with 34,000 miles on it. As of today, I have 89,000 miles on it and had my first major service call this week. I was concerned with a transmission which seemed to misbehave and screeching brakes. My out of pocket: 1. New rear brakes and rotors, the brakes were down to 4mm ($850) 2. New air filters ($125) Thankfully I bought the extended warranty at the then choking price of $5,200. The turbos were making a whistling noise and there appeared to be a lag in in acceleration (it would jump from 2nd gear to first in a lurching manner) so my service advisor said that they would figure it out. Pardon my pedestrian recounting of what they did: 1. Fuel control valve was replaced ($650) 2. Head unit (I believe the brains of the vehicle located behind the nav) was replaced ($2,500+) 3. Something else replaced ($800) They thought the turbos were going to stop whistling with these fixes, but they are now keeping it over the weekend and ordered new turbos at a price that they estimated of $6-8,000. Holy crap! I don't know many people who have actually gotten their money out of the extended warranty game, but I did it because it was year-1 of the //M model and anything that goes wrong with an //M goes really wrong. This is still the best car I have ever owned and it has served me very well both in the worst of snowstorms that the midwest can deliver and the best of speed that a straight and long road allows... last week I got it up to 152 MPH comfortably. Amazing vehicle... I want another one when I wear the "Stealth Bomber" out. Have fun and safe motoring. J |

This car was not a CPO. I purchased it from a friend of mine who is still regretting it.
The extended warranty included all of the upsells the dealer could convince me was a necessity. Of the extended warrantied I have purchased (2 before this) I never got my money out of it, until this one. Woa!! Again, the reason I bought it was because this was year 1 of the 555 HP engine, and I was worried that it would have something go bad in a big way. My conservative nature with a healthy dose of fear. Good luck on your decisions. J |

Wow, so all of that was covered?? Holy crap, did you get your money back!
Thanks for the report. I have heard BMW is now offering the new Gold / Platinum warranties, and am thinking of going with the Platinum once my warranty expires on my 2013. A BMW tech told me (so meaning, I haven't researched it myself, hehe) that the Platinum from BMW is akin to the factory warranty. I am skeptical on that, though. I'll likely hit the 50,000 miles way before I hit 4 years so it's been on my mind from time to time. What warranty do you have, is it the BMW one or a different one? |

I have always bought an extended warranty with my BMW's. All third party because BMW Canada at the time did not offer Ex-warranties. My previous e70 X5 cost me $4,200 for the warranty. I had lots of battles with the warranty company as usual. However, ultimately they paid and were not happy. The last year of my ex-warranty there was close to $25,000 of warranty repair work and this was on top of work done under factory warranty!. Evaporator & condenser, steering rack, 2 power steering pumps, 2 rear strut satellite control units, Coolant bottle, blower fan and control unit, front sway bar, comfort access control unit and that's what I can remember off the top. i was so happy to get rid of the X5. I will be buying an extended warranty for my X6M if i do decide to keep it after Factory warranty runs out.

This was the Gold (I think) which is basically the factory warranty including the radio, nav and other electronics... that was what brought it up to $5200.
Yes, it was a BMW warranty, so there is a $50 deductible. I so choked on it when I decided to get the warranty, but am really glad I got it. |

Nice, thanks for the info - I will definitely be getting the BMW warranty. That's amazing.
I had a 2001 325Ci with an extended warranty, and so many things went wrong that cost me thousands out of pocket on top of it, that I haven't had much faith in after market extended warranties after that experience. Thus, your thread is really helpful! |

I purchased the platinum when I picked up my '10, and the maintenance was included upto 100,000 miles. I am also glad I did, as I needed to have the transfer case replaced recently, and it was about 1 month before it arrived from Germany. I've also needed swap bar end links (they were covered after I complained vehemently as BMW argued that was normal wear and tear) after 62,000 miles. Had a few other things covered as well-oh yea, injectors and coils. Hopefully my pads and rotors wear out at the same time as that is covered under the maintenance part.

Very nice write up and it is great to hear that you actually bought the warranty and it was useful. So many times I purchased warranties for vehicles, electronics, etc and never had to use them.
Thanks for the write up and best of luck with the ride! |
