1 /24 days in the shop

Counting, my car has been in the shop for maintenance and warranty work about 1 out of every 24 days in the last 2 years.

Does this sound reasonable for an X5M?

Is it acceptable?

I think that's bad, it's like having to see a dentist every month....

while it does sound way too much, it would help if you elaborate more on why and what is each visit for. If different things just keep failing on your car and you are still under warranty, maybe you can get BMW to lemon it.

Lemon Law

Double check your state's lemon laws, because you may have hit the threshold. Make sure you get all of your paperwork in order with dates and reasons for the work, and them ask an attorney who knows your state's lemon laws to look over your case. I did that with one of my cars and watch BMW step up to help you as they don't want that added to their records.

Hey guys, thanks for your comments.

Well, the car has been in for routine maintenance on three instances and about four more for warranty work.

3 visits for oil, brake fluid replacement and a vehicle check.

All this is acceptable on the maintenance side.

The warranty work recently included the sway bar links replacement and that seems to be working ok.

The non-resolving issue has been a backup camera failure. The camera was replaced already twice. The cables replaced twice. And the software reflashed twice.
All these happened either during visits only for the camera or in conjunction with the routine visits.

But now, counting service and maintenance and extended time for fixing the camera, plus visits only to fix the camera and now the visit to fix the links, I am seeing about 30 days the car has been in the shop over 2 years of ownership.

This global figure is the part that bothers me. And on top of this, BMWNA says that I should have driven more, because my warranty and service expire next week and they will not perform the upcoming oil change due in August or brake pads. The brake sensor indicates there are 3000 miles left and the minimum required is 2000.

So, I am pretty unhappy with them.

My car has 38080 miles and it is just unfortunate, that I still need to go back, as the camera is failing again when the car is hot, and that I will have to pay the rear brakes and next service out of pocket.

Mine has been back to the shop once for an oil change. I'll probably jinx myself saying everything else has been great on the truck.

The car has never broken down and did not get stranded due to a technicality.

However, I am tired of going in for this baby stuff related to the camera.

Let's see what BMWNA state this week -- I was pretty stern with them Friday, telling them to count all the days my car was in the shop.

And on the non maintenance or warranty side of things, the car is a joy to drive!! What a paradox?

Despite the trouble I do not intend to get rid of this car yet.

Let me get this straight... 1/24 days which includes routine maintenance or does not? I am
Sorry but if I have to bring my car in for oil and brakes and it takes 2 days, I don't consider that "not having my car". If your talking 1/24 days your car is in because it is broke, then I would understand the frustration.

sorry, but i think your case sounds very weak, routine maintenance is normal, and those maintenances can be performed in a few hours. if you choose to leave it with them for longer because of convenience factors, than that's your choice. So in actuality you really only had 2 issues, one of which was resolved. Your only case is the camera that's not working, and that's not a strong enough reason for anyone to deem your car a lemon and BMW certainly won't buy it back. If you are really unhappy with it, you can always trade it in for another car.

I am glad you guys replied. No, I actually do not want to have a case. It would not be reasonable to lemon the car or anything like that.

Although, now near the end of the warranty it is necessary to decide to purchase an extended coverage, or not.

There has been excessive time used to solve a simple electronic gremlin and unfortunately, this has taken from driving the car. I guess you are right, and this is not so bad.

I will do oil and spark plug replacement at home and probably get drivetrain only warranty. Also, probably just rear pads in the fall since the fronts still indicate 50k miles remaining.

The car will be paid off next year and do not wish to sink 4k or so into a warranty.
