Got an email from BMW that the 2013 map update is available at a cost of $245. Anyone did this update? No need to visit the dealer apparently as BMW sends the update on USB. Thoughts?

$245 is a ridiculous price! That's $245 profit for BMW. You could buy 2 new Garmins and get more features and greater ease of use. Garmin gives you the actual Posted Speed Limit for the road you are traveling. My last car I paid $2300 for the GPS and it didn't have PSL. This is such an important feature I don't understand why it isn't offered on far mor expensive GPS units.

Sorry about the rant. I miss my Garmin.

Well there is an option called "speed limit info"...but I do agree these map updates are a rip off. Got 2012 maps, but a lot of important roads finished in 2011 are not showing. Will not cash out for another update.

Knowing what the speed limit on roads that I seldom travel keeps me out of trouble!

Is this "speed limit info" option an add on or can we access it through the basic GPS that comes with the car. I have a 2011.

I agree definitely too expense for a map update especially when an aftermarket Garmin is so much better. The maps are from tomtom so that may explain it. The worst so far is the ford sync IMHO.

Just would have to hang a GPS on the window again. Not sure I will go that route...

First, I agree that the map is a rip off. BMW touted $0 maintenance costs during the initial term. Yet, I gotta pay $245 in software maintenance fees? What a deception.

Second, are you seriously not going to pay the $245 and strap a Tom Tom to your beautiful bimmer?

After paying $70k+ on a car with free maintenance, I will "unhappily" keep paying $250 every time I need an updated map.

We have to raise a complain to BMW though.

On the other side, I believe BMW should follow Audi and give-up on their own mapping system and just use the unmatchable Google Maps.

Good point, I def do not want to stick a GPS on the window. My maps are 2012 currently. I may go for the update or just wait until next year...

My dealership installed the 2013 map update under warranty because the 2012 map data was causing the navigation system to malfunction. This is what happened:

I have a 2012 x5d (late September build) and, ever since I took delivery, I noticed that no street names at all would appear on zoom levels 800ft or 1/2 mile, and at 400ft and 200ft, while the street names would appear, they would not appear when the map would regenerate as the car moved (kinda defeats the purpose of a map, eh?). While getting the alternator bolt recall done I asked my dealer to investigate the map issue I was having. The service guys verified my concern. The invoice states: "Found available nav update for vehicle SIB 65 22 12: install road map database 2013. Labor op code 00 61 577." This work and parts were 100% covered by the warranty.

Installing the 2013 map update largely fixed the problem I was having (though the Tom Tom map database still seems skittish compared to the older Navteq data). I imagine that, if any of you can demonstrate a similar flaw with your map database, you may get the 2013 database under warranty. If, however, you have an iDrive system with the Navteq map data, I suggest that you keep it.

I put the new update in this week. It was seamless, took about an hour. I got a new view "Perspective in traffic mode" that I didn't have before. I haven't noticed any other software changes. I had the late 2009 version prior to the upgrade.

FWIW, this is the same price that Mercedes charges for its updates.

Downloaded the 3 x 8gb iso files put each one on a separate USB stick. You could use a single 32gb USB stick and put all the files into a folder and just move the files around as the cic asks for each stick.

Does anyone have a copy of the "SIB 65 22 12" or can tell me where I can find a copy of the bulletin. I looked online and search the forum I cant find it. BMW has my suv two days for the navigation issue they said they are looking for the bulletin because they cant replicate my complaint that it leads to the wrong locations and the distances are off and not registering with main intersection street name. I gave them the bulletin number and the sa said he cant find it.

Does anyone know if this Nav update adds the intelligence to automatically switch between day/night mode? If it does - I'm in!

Its pretty stupid that a car of this pedigree does not already have the ability to do this...

No change in day/night functionality when I updated my 2010 last month. I finally programmed a button for that function. Still bugs me.

I received a post card in the mail indicating that the new maps were available for that price. However, when I went to the dealership, I was told that the quoted price was for DVD based systems. Since I had a harddrive system, I needed to purchase the software and pay the installation labor all at a cost of over $600.

Can anyone provide a how-to on how to on how to perform the update? What software do I need to download, what software do I need to purchase, and how do I go about installing it. Also, what is the FSC?
