This may be far fetched but I've noticed that if the lower portion of the gate is not closed properly, the top part won't work (the way you described it). See if your lower portion is shut properly, they may have opened the rear and didn't close it completely. Hope this helps...

Yeah, I kinda figured you already tried that...

Well, according to this diagram from RealOEM, there is some sort of micro switch #8 on the diagram...I wonder if that is responsible for registering whether the hatch is closed or not.

Maybe see if you can find some contact points that may be dirty or corroded.

I have found that if I hit the button in the center console to open the back hatch, it will unlock it. If i hit it again it will raise the door a few inches. If I keep doing this is will keep lifting the gate a few inches until it is fully open. Then to close it I really need to muscle it down.

Maybe the motor went out and the timing is just coincidence.
