This may be far fetched but I've noticed that if the lower portion of the gate is not closed properly, the top part won't work (the way you described it). See if your lower portion is shut properly, they may have opened the rear and didn't close it completely. Hope this helps...

Yeah, I kinda figured you already tried that...

Well, according to this diagram from RealOEM, there is some sort of micro switch #8 on the diagram...I wonder if that is responsible for registering whether the hatch is closed or not.

Maybe see if you can find some contact points that may be dirty or corroded.
