Whispbar and Thule Hyper 612
Pulled the trigger yesterday on Yakima Whispbar and Thule Hyper 612 for my 2012 X5 35d. For the uninitiated, the Whispbar has an aerodynamic shape which means no noise, and no increase in gas consumption. It also has a low profile sleek look matching the vehicle perfectly. I added the Thule Hyper 612 roof box. Recently, I purchased the BMW rear mounted bicycle carrier, so I am ready for spring/summer 2013! Beauty of this is that I had a $259 REI Dividend + a 20% off coupon on the first item - took this on the Thule Hyper, and walked away all in for $946.68 including tax and shipping to the store (free). The Thule Hyper costs almost that on it's own, so I am a happy camper, literally! See photo's attached.

Just installed mine. Had to get the adapt8 bolts to use with the S46 bars. Got the 20% off too and credit from the fairing I didn't use. Install was a breeze and they are quiet. I don't expect silence due to having the BMW race bike carriers up there. But it is much quieter than the Thule and the BMW racks.
Very flush and well built. Yakima made a good product. |

There are no bolts that comes with the Whispbar. They do extend out to fit your roof rails. At first you might not know they extend and think they are too short to fit.
The xadapt8 http://www.thule.com/en-US/US/Products/Base-Racks/LoadAccessories/Xadapt8 I have the BMW(Thule) race bike carriers. BMW uses a wider T-Bar track than the Yakima. So the xadapt8 comes with 3 smaller square that fits the narrower Yakima T-Bar channels. 2 long bolts and 1 short bolt. This is if you have the BMW race carriers. But they are designed to fit most T-Bar accessories. The Thule version of the BMW Race Bike carriers has a clamp instead. That's the only difference. Built the same way. REI has a 20% off right now so take advantage of it if you can. They are very low profile and looks very good and is very quiet as well. If you want some pictures let me know. |

No problem. The hex key at the end of one of the bars in a slot that it slips into. When you unlock the cover you will see it. It goes back in another a a lot sides. The cover is locked when you lock the rack.
Also use a long flat tool like a butter knife to push down on the rubber strip along the channel when using the xadapt8. Otherwise you will push the rubber strip towards the other side. Just depress it like a doctor would with your tongue during an examine. The metal square head will slide along the channel. Best way to slide it is to lift up on it once inserted. It will butt up against the top of the aluminum channel and slides back and forth much easier. |

Thanks for the reply! So then is there any advantage to getting the raised version (S7) where you have to buy the matching foot kit (extra cost) but have it sit farther away from the roof? How bad is the noise with the sunroof closed and something mounted on the racks? Debating whether to buy a cheaper OEM crossbar set or spend a little more for the Whispbar S46 or S7. |

With reference to the Thule, I removed the Thule badges, and the colored cross bar was the virtually identical in color to my X5, together with the Whispbar it looked like the low profile solution that BMW should have offered in the first place. |
