DIY - 2012 X5, OEM Backup / Reversing Camera Retrofit. How 2 Install for le$$ !!!
***I want to thank you rooxor for helping me with this retrofit***
If your car has a PDC and iDrive navigation but don’t have a backup camera continue reading. PARTS TO BUY: Backup Camera # 66539240351 or 66539216283 Camera Gasket # 66539187808 Retrofit Cable # 61122154696 Control Unit any one of the list will work: 66539291386, 66539285390, 66539277951, 66539259357, 66539254345 Most of this parts are easy to find, do your research, used parts are cheaper if you trust your seller. The one that is hard to find is the retrofit wire harness # 61122154696 looks like buying from Europe is the only option. If you have a good friend or a relative over there use them, will make your life easier. CODING AFTER INSTALLATION: Add option*$3AG to the VO. If you don't know coding use a local or one of the remote coders. TOOLS: You will need some tools but nothing special, a set of trim removal kit will really help. Additional: Electrical Tape, Velcro Stripes and pack of Cable Ties, all from HomeDepot for $10 Parts to remove: Lift gate covering panel, front passenger side/under dash panel, front middle A/C vent cover, CD/radio/Navigation Head unit and the fuse box in the back but no wires to be unplugged. DIY: 1. Remove lift gate covering panel. 2. There is a black plastic covering where camera will be install, remove it. 3. Install your new camera with gasket. 4. Run the HSD cable from retrofit harness along with other cables through the rubber grommet(careful) in tailgate, right side side. Run HSD cable down under the fuse box. 5. There is plenty of room to install Control Unit over there, do it. I used few pieces of velcro. 6. Connect HSD cable on bot ends Camera and Control Unit. 7. Remove Fusebox and connect Green/Blue wire to the rear right fuse box.*Fuse is #108 in the luggage compartment. Connect Brown wire with the ring eyelet to ground/negative support point next to the fuse box. Connect plug to Control Unit. 8. Run remaining 5 cables from harness along with others behind the panel where the 12V outlet is. Take it all the way to the front passenger side under the glove box. Stash wires under the plastic doorstep cover. 9. Remove Plastic Panel under the glovebox. 10. Remove Vents Covering Panel, unplug 4 connectors. 11. Remove A/C Covering Panel, unplug 2 connectors. 12. Remove Navigation/CD/Radio Unit but unplug only the Big Connector there. 13. Separate Green and Orange/Green wires from other 3 for about 2 feet, run all 5 from back side of the Navigation/CD/Radio Unit leave 3 next to the Big Connector and: A. Connect green and Orange/Green wires to the matching colors wires from the A/C Plug, you unplugged before. Use the 2 wire taps from Wire Harness. B. Connect other 3 wires to the pin slots on the Big Connector: Pin 21 - Red Wire Pin 24 - White Wire Pin 23 - Shield Wire (clear) C. Reconnect Big plug back to Navigation/CD/Radio Unit. 14. At this point you can do your coding to make sure everything is OK. 15. If everything is right, tie wires and cables when need it and start putting all the removed parts back. Congratulation you do have now a OEM Backup Camera retrofit for about 1/3 of what a BMW dealer will charge. Note: If you want to go the extra mile and spend $250 more you can buy: HSD cable # 61129241791, Control Unit Bracket # 61359199466, 3 x Fillister Head Self-Tapping Screw # 07146973628 and install Camera Control Unit on the front driver side at the original installation place. Here you cab see good quality pictures and pdf on this retrofit. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/70z6vfuci...zHi1WZLPa?dl=0 |

No. To do this OEM retrofit your car must have PDC, rear only is fine. You may retrofit PDC to your car and after that do the camera retrofit.
I see you drive E90, parts will be different but path will be similar. Check this thread: http://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=873744 or this one: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1005301 Second link is for an OEM look like but is a very good one. I hope this helps. Last edited by iDido; 09-17-2014 at 08:56 AM.. |

If your goal is to add Backup camera you can go with: 1. Rear view camera and Reverse Image Emulator - $150 2. Video interface and rear view camera - $400-500 with the second option you will get option to add up to 3 video sources(iPod, iPhone, video game etc) to your CIC screen. @ omgboost
"What does the Rear view camera and Reverse Image Emulator - $150 do? I don't need the second option since I don't have Ipods or iPhones." You will get OEM INTEGRATED rear view on the CIC screen. There are two items to buy, installation. Coding is optional but recommended. 1.Emulator: http://www.ebay.com/itm/281217636811 2. Camera pick one from here: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from...camera&_sop=15 This is the cheapest option to add backup camera. |
