x5m impressions

drove my boss's x5m he just picked up for a bit, its carbon black w/ everything, he's switching from a RR SC (awesome truck but my rsx-s is faster in a straight line) although im sure if we go head on he'll probably flatten my rsx like a pancake.

First thing i notice is the redline which is only 6k quite odd for an 'M' engine i thought. I still can't get use to the funky shifter ( drove a x6 last week and a 750il sport as well). The exhausts note is nice for OEM but still a bit on the quiet side.

I adjust my seats, turn the M button on and off i go. I drove it in D initially but it seemed to shift way too early, also when you push the car hard you can hear the exhaust let out some back pressure.

Coming up to a stop light i roll down the windows and give it a few good revs and it isn't as rev happy as the M but you can deff tell it ain't no normal truck.

Light turns green i make a left and give it some give it a good amount of gas, dsc light chirps but the body doesn't roll like you would expect in a truck this size. I also notice a slight turbo lag then 4.5k rpm a GUSH of power up to to PEG the needle to redline and then it shifts. I then switched to S to try the paddle shifters. Shifts are quick and the car is very responsive to upshift downshifts, however the engine has so much power past 4.5k+ rpm and the red line being 6k the shifts feel like they are coming too quick. I feel it would really be over the top if had may be 7k red line or even a 7500 red line just to enjoy the extra boost. I take a few more sweeping turns @ 40~50mph and its just planted so it gives a lot of confidence you normally don't get from a truck.

I throw the keys to one of my engineers and i sit shotgun, to get a feel from the passenger side. He does a quick U turn, pushed the car pretty hard and the raw turbo pull is exhilarating ( he also races bikes) we come up to another sweeping right hander and he goes to the far left lane to hit the apex and pulled away. 50,80,100 came quick , very quick but it didn't feel it.

all in all great truck and it'll give the cayenne turbo S a run for its money.

The turbo definitely delivers TONS of power but may be because I'm a F1 fan, I thought it was missing the high revving M engines characteristic and intoxicating sound of the engine.

yes yes i know this thread is worthless without pics. i'll post some tomorrow afternoon.

The carbon black really shines little past dusk or under a street light as it gives off a blueish/greyish/black.

He also had a modded out m6/m5/rs4/997 techart turbo before this car.

I'm sure once the car is broken in we'll do some m3 vs x5m runs.

on a side note i also got my fabspeeds HFC and X pipe

Nice write-up, thanks. Curious if you have ever driven a Cayenne Turbo S? That is the only truck I have driven that would eb a good comp and have to say I wasn't overly impressed. Yes, fast in a straight line and handled well for a truck, but just didn't give me much of a thrill. Looking forward to testing an X5/6M to see how the motor feels.

Based on what you are saying, if they do use this motor in the F10 M5 and tweak it for a higher redline it could be one stellar sedan.

Thanks for the review. I am/was seriously considering this truck for a replacement ride to the M5 until the new one comes out. However the more I read the more I feel that its a great truck but no filler for 3 years until the next M5/M6.

I am just looking for a car that I can throw around and have some fun with. I am really looking at the M3 in 6spd because I just miss a manual tranny oh so much. My only issue with the ///M engines right now is their lack of low end torque and being a huge city driver, low end torque is where my fun would be.

Ok .. talk to you guys later.

I saw a black one parked along street in West Vancouver on Sunday afternoon. I was surprised that they are already on the streets. Time to check it out in person at the dealership soon.

Just built one on bmwusa and it looks like you can get cinnamon leather - Almost enough reason alone for me to buy one. Miss that from my E46...

You will not need to wait 3 years for the next ///M5

Damn, I am glad I read this post.

You are supposed to keep the RPM under 5,500 for the first 1,200 miles, according to the user manual. Therefore, I will not be letting anyone take my X5 M out for a spin until I am past the break-in period.

Thanks for the heads-up.

Got 400 miles on my M, another 800 to go!

I wonder why the 5.0 sounds better than the M version?

engine probably wasn't warmed up all the way, i did ask and checked the engine temp but i didn't notice the redline drop after the warm up like my m3 either , probably didn't drive it enough.

I'm sure it would be a difference exp with the extra revs to 7k.

That is quite subjective, with the M button pressed (opens flaps in the exhaust to improve flow and sound) it sounds on par;but the firing order of this engine is different as is the intake/exhaust manifold (patented CCM), the turbos (which effects sound) as well as several internals.

The biggest difference is going to be in sound when shifting- the ///M guys have utilized cylinder deactivation to increase smoothness and speed of shifts (lessens torque and strain on drive train and makes the power easier to handle) So when it shifts it is a 6 cylinder and the sound changes.

Hope that helps a bit!

Here you go Joe! Took a few crappy pictures of the dirty X5M tonight.

http://public.fotki.com/dinanblast/x5m-01/

Funny to catch you on here. I'm on every other day to see which tuner has done anything to the X5/6M but no luck yet.

The 21 inch black wheels are on BTW.

BTW, I haven't even hit 90 on this yet...I'm gonna have to kill Steve! j/k And no, you know how I feel about "break in periods"...WHAT STIKING BREAKING PERIOD!

Would have to disagree, had X650, while it sounded great I do think the Ms are noticeably louder. Especially when hearing from outside.

love the wheels! Is that BMW 215 or a replica? I'm thinking of getting a set myself for my upcoming X5M. I like that grey colour it comes with.

I spoke to my dealer today about this wheel on the X5M. He reckons you need to order the wheel arch extension kit with it. Is that relevant to the M (ie. did you have to modify your wheel arch) or is that only for the standard X5?

No mod was necessary. If you go to build the X5M on bmw.com there is an Accessories section and the wheels are on there.

Did you get the full setup (front:285/40R21 rear:325/30R21)? Did you ever get to compare ride versus the stock setup?

Thanks (and great wheels)!
