Can Anyone Identify This Pipe

Hi All,

Bought an 09 X5 R70 4.8i a couple of months ago. Been tracking down a misfire that started last week but that's another story. Changed plugs and coils when I saw this pipe. It's a stiff plastic about 1/4" and goes under towards the engine.

Is it supposed to be connected to something? I've looked in the workshop manual and online but can't find anything.

I thought it should at least have a breather or something rather than being open but oh well......
