Coolant Reservoir Replacement caused water pump to go bad?

We just had a local mechanic test and replace the coolant reservoir.
5 minutes after we pick up the car a message pops out that the engine is overheating and we must stop the car.

Did they disconnect the water pump?! When we picked up the car the mechanic mentioned that he ran a computer diagnostic and got zero error codes.

Did anyone encounter something similar?

This is on a X6 E71.
