Thumbs down Noise from rear hatch door plastic covers

Hi there,

I have this "plastic" noise all over my rear hatch door, I remember the noise from my former X6 30d, but this is stronger, I took off the hole inner plastic covers and put some one side adhesive foam tape all over the edge of the plastics, I did minimize the noise in some way, but in bumped roads the noises are still there..........

Yes I may have same issue. It sounds like a clacking noise coming from the rear RHS when ever I go over bumps in the road but I am not sure from where exactly. Can advise which covers you found the noise coming from. I will then check to see if mine is the same.

Update # 1: I "invented" an easy solution, bought a roll of anti-leak tape( I don't know the exact english name for this product), is the aluminum tape with petroleum layer used to stop water leaks coming from a metal roof, the results were great!

My theory was simple, if I cover the whole backside of each plastic cover with this "heavy" tape, I will get a firmer body feeling from the plastic covers, (difference is like taking an empty glass and then fill it with water, if you hit it with your finger nail, you will hear and feel the difference in sound and weight)

Check the following picture of the job in progress, all black parts were covered after I finished the job

Update #2: after I finished the job described in my previous post, I found there still was a noise from the rear cargo area !!! looking at all the plastic parts finally I found the noise source was from the cargo area cover (the one that covers and folds at top of the whole cargo area)
This cover had a small sideways movement that was making the noise against the plastic base where it seats, so I took a couple of some small pieces of a "foam-cushion-tape" and install them on each side, now I really can say noises are 95% off, check the following picture, you will see the small stripes of tape

You may also want to put some stripes of the "cushion-tape" all over the perimeter where the plastic covers meet the car body, that way you will create a small gap between the car body and the plastic covers, (this is done to avoid noises from scratching between plastics against the metal) IMPORTANT: if you are going to do this, is better to mark a line on the cars body with a pencil in order to know exactly where the plastic edges rests on the car, and add the tape stripes to the car body not to the plastic edge, that is the reason for making the pencil trace before putting some tape
Check the picture below for better understanding. Good luck !

clacking noise

I am experiencing a similar clacking noise on my x6 coming from both front doors when I make sharp turns at low speed and/or hit small path holes.
At the beginning I thought it was from the internal plastic panels, but it turned out that if I slightly open the front windows (1-2mm) the noise almost disappear, anyone experienced a similar issue?
What's causing this?..it's really annoying and almost embarrassing if you have a passenger win the car.

The X6 is build from more pieces......so it`s normal to hear some noise , when cornering .
And the noise from back comes from the truck....it`s normal noise mainly when you have sport suspension and 20" .

p.s i just turn the music louder

Bumping this old topic - really (pleasantly) surprised that there are not more "rattle" types of posts or problems.

I have recently noticed a slight rattle coming from behind my head while driving. I first I thought it was the cargo cover, so I drove without it for a couple of days and discovered this was not the problem.

I am now thinking that it is coming from the sunroof cover when it is slid back in the open position. When I close the cover, 95% of the rattle disappears. The dealership said I will need to leave the car for a whole day for them to investigate it themselves and try to fix it, which they said may entail removing the entire headliner. Am I crazy for thinking that removal and reinstallation of the entire headliner may just cause more problems/rattles down the road?

Anyone here have had a similar problem and can offer a solution? Thanks!

I'm wondering if BMW got a hold of the rattle issue at some point. Because my X6 is rattle free from day#1.

Well my car is 18 months old and I am pretty sure Chicago has some of the worst roads in the US. I won't compare them to yours (never been there), but let me tell you, they are TERRIBLE.

The car did have a series of issues in our recent cold spell (-5F, -20C) including battery drain, comfort access not working, interior fan not working, and suspension knocking, but now that we have started to warm up, all is pretty good again and still no rattles

I did notice a slight rattle over bumps from the rear. I bet it's the cargo cover...it's too cold in NY to troubleshoot.

I ordered X6 just because of the terrible roads we have by benefiting from the relatively high ground-clearance..

I am happy that X6 is doing well in terrible roads without rattles..

Let's hope mine will enjoy same quality and same results here..

trunk area rattle noise

Hi all,
I had the same problem like all of you. a brand new X6M with rattle noises from the cargo area, I didn't know what generated the rattle or how to deal with it. since I had other rattles in the car and the dealer either did not hear the noise! or just could not fix it, I thought why bother tell them about this one....then while having an oil change I mentioned it to the maint. manager who later on drove the car and heared the rattle. he got a technician to align the hatch gate and the rattle is much less now, almost gone.
it may be a fluke but its worth trying. before starting to remove panels or add stuff to dampen the noise, ask your dealer to check the alignment of the hatch gate, it may work. hope this helps.

it is the hatch itself or the back door - they called it the hatch gate, so I used their term.

I wonder if X6 with Adaptive Drives gets less rattle due to less 'flex' of the body..
