Getting out of the X5. Physically. Help?
I have thought about getting an X5 for a while. I took a couple test drives, but the thing that gets me is how tall the drivers seat is. I find getting out my leg hits the side. The dealer indicates I should place my foot on the running board, and step down. This seems ackward to me. I don't really like he running boards anyway. So my question is for all, but more directed to those who do not have the running boards.
Whats the trick to getting out of your SAV? Is this an issue for anyone but me? PS. My Height 5-10, normal weight. and Wife is 5-3. |

Being comfortable when getting in and out of your car is so important that you may want to consider a different car. I bought my 550i thinking "oh, it's just a matter of adjusting the seat correctly" - wrong! I love the car but getting in and out of it - and seeing out of it - are the two things that bother me on a daily basis. Knowing this now, would I buy another one? I'm not sure. BTW, I'm also 5'10" normal weight.
I just ordered a 2012 X5 diesel and the one thing I checked very carefully this time was the ingress/egress comfort and visibility. IMO the X5 scored very high here. I found it easy to get in and out of and it has super visibility. My wife won't drive my 550i because she cannot see out of it, but she chose the X5 as her daily driver. My advice: don't buy the car until you are sure that this won't bother you every time you drive it. |

I hit my leg a few times, and dirtied a few pants but I got used to it, I don't hit my leg anymore. I don't even notice it there.
As for sitting in the driver seat, I don't know what is wrong with it but I can never adjust the steering wheel and the seat the way I like it. I want the steering wheel to sit low close to my legs but then the wheel blocks the speedometer, and turn signal indicators. No big deal I lower the seat, then the steering wheel is too high. Anyway, I got used to driving it with the steering wheel in higher position eventually.

Funny. My girlfriend and I had problems when test driving the X5 with running boards but when we got into an M sport (no running boards) we had no problem so we bought. The running boards are awkward as I've had a couple of sport utes in the past.

Besides the running boards, another factor is the seats. If they are the sport seats, the side bolsters may make it tougher to exit. I have the M Sport package and Multi Contour Seats. Getting in is easy with an easy step up and over. Getting out I do swing my leg over the side bolster and slide on it a bit. This has caused some wear in the 17k miles so far. I noticed the Cayenne S had deep side bolsters making it much more difficult to exit than my X5.

my 35I has the multi contour seats with the nappa leather. The left bolster on the driver seat bottom will definitely catch you right smack in the crack if you're not careful.... and i'm sure i am not the only one that has experienced THAT pleasure with their X5.
No car is perfect, but there are plenty of nits to pick with this 2012 X5. |
