Winter Tires/Wheels: A Story of Evolution!
Ok, so I'm a little crazy. But, I love this stuff and the guys that have bought my "pre-loved" wheels and tires can attest that I appreciate all of it.
I started out with OEM Style 209 18" with Blizzaks. They were left over from my diesel. They were Ok, but not great. A little superior in deep snow but not great on ice. And even with spacers they didn't look the part. Sorry all you narrow tires are fine haters! Then I got OEM Style 298 wheels with the OEM Good Year tires. The look was better but the tires didn't cut it for me. Braking was not the best and they slid when they should have bit. Now, OEM Style 300 wheels with Pirelli Ice/Snow in stock 315/35 and 275/40 sizes. Ok, they look great obviously. I just had them fixed up so they are perfect. The ride is true and we don't have snow yet. Let them slide a little; who cares? That's what driving fun is right? Enjoy the pics. |

And you expect those tires in those sizes to perform better than your 18" blizzaks?

Yes. Conditions change and the sizes don't make as much difference as the ability to manage the vehicle. It's all wheel drive. I'll update you if I end up in the woods and I'll be more than happy to eat crow after eating trees. But I don't think that will happen.
And now that I'm back at my desktop I'll edit: the Blizzaks were ok in deep snow and that is the only time. They were noisy, and quite frankly sucked on most surfaces such as plowed roads and anything other than deep snow. So, I'll update the post this winter with candid feedback on the Pirelli tires with true comparison from the seat of my pants to the Good Year slicks and the Blizzaks. Does anyone have experience with Pirelli Scorpion Snow & Ice 275/40/20 all around? I haven't put them on yet (bought lightly used this summer, still holding out on mounting them, stored in the basement), but am eager to know what I should expect.

So we got some of the early season snow. Wow! About 12" so far in most places. More on the way. Here is how much was left in my side driveway when I backed in this afternoon.
The tires are incredible by the way. I think it feels more stable than the others I've tried. Enjoy your fall weather! |

I'd be interested in your experience on ice, like a glazed over intersection. The X5 with pretty much any winter tire will go through deep snow.

All in all, I'll give these Pirelli tires tops so far. Now would they be even better in 19s? Maybe I'll try that too! For this winter I'm set though. |

2011 M Sport Winter Tires
Does 18" fit the 5.0 with M Sport Pkg? Stock has 20" and read somewhere that the calipers for the ones with M sport does not clear the 18"s. Does anyone know if it is true?

I have the 209s on my 50i M-Sport. Be sure to run spacers as otherwise it looks completely silly.

The 298's fit the front hub but the rears needed a 15mm spacer because of the 74.1 bore size if i'm correct...The spacers just push the wheels out further to give the truck a more aggressive look...a lot of guys on here use 15mm on the front and 20mm on the rear but its up to you and what your preference is...you can go even wider if you want...hope this helps

Wow! Shame on me, I forgot to post an update. I ended up buying a new set of summer wheels/tires so I sold the 300M set and switched the 469M over to winters now.
I think I'm done now. But I'll probably either sell this or see if someone wants the lease. Enjoy winter everyone! |

When I put the 209, the status indicates a TPS malfunction. Took the car to the tire place and check the sensors and indicated that they all work. Asked me to hit the reset TPS and drive. I did and after a long (30 mins+) drive showing "resetting TPS", it resorted back to TPS malfunction.
Now....my car is 2011, these wheels came off from (bought used) a 2007. Any idea what could be going on? |

My 35i M-sport has 333's on it now (with the stock Dunlop RFT's which are not appropriate for winter), but I'm getting a set of 300's for a winter tire set. Sure, 19's would be better in snow, but I don't want it to handle like dog doo on days where it isn't snowing. This is my main driver for getting the 20's for winter. My thoughts: Winter tire selection is highly dependent on where you live. Here, south of Denver, we can get amazing sun during the winter. I was out in a t-shirt and shorts today. But we can get a blizzard tomorrow morning, and I can shovel snow later in the aforementioned t-shirt and shorts. It's just the way our weather is. 5 Days per winter, snow tires are mandatory - you can get by on all-seasons, but it's not really comfortable and you may have issues in really really bad storms. If you go skiing add to this number. 20 days/winter, you can get by with all-seasons, but really perform in winter tires. The remainder of the winter is just insurance. |
