Right side upper A arm bolts were loose!
Started hearing a clunking noise when braking hard. I pulled my 2011 X5 with 52k into the garage and with some help from a friend backing up and pulling forward and could hear the noise coming from the top of the strut mount. After double checking all bolts that could be loose i found that the rt side upper A arm bolts were loose. I tightened the 16mm bolts and everything is nice and quiet again. Question, why would they be loose? The left side A arm bolts were tight. I have never had any work done on the upper suspension. Hopefully this may help anyone that might have had a clunking noise in the front end.

I replaced my sway bar and links due to clunking and replaced the a-arm bolts because they weren't factory parts as they were either 14mm or 16mm sizes and didn't even have a lock washer. I'm pretty sure the previous owner cut corners lowering the car since it's had lowering links in the rear since the day I got it.

sorry can you please tell me which bolts you tightened exactly. i have a loud squeaking noise that i get on slow sharp turns. turning the steering wheels in either direction will cause the sound and its driving me crazy i dont know what it could be. it could be anything for all i know (tie rod, lower ball joint, upper ball joint, etc.) looking to check the easy stuff first before digging deeper. thanks in advance.

Someone installed the wrong bolts of mine at the top of the A, so I replaced them with stock ones while replacing my swaybar links since they were clicking over bumps.
