Any Tire Issues?
Hi All,
I love the look of the X5 (and X6) with the 20" wheels and thinking about getting either one, but given the rough roads in NYC, I'm concerned about the low-profile tires and the greater potential for bubbles, blowouts and cracked wheels. Have any opinions/experiences to share about your luck or mis-fortune with the 20" wheels/tires? Please do so; I look forward to reading about it. Thanks, Rich |

I hit a huge pot hole in Houston, about 6in deep. It had to be very wide to swallow the 10in front wheels. The tires and wheels came out without a scratch, but the car suffered a light mis-alignment, which I realized 5k miles later with uneven tire wear.
Go for the 20in version, it looks much better compared to the 19s. Not many SUVs out there have stock staggered wheels and tires, and beautiful as the E70. |

I think the bigger issue has been the excessive noise coming from the RFT BMW uses on stock. Many have changed out the rubber for a much more complacent and quieter ride.

+1. The factory Duns RFT are loud and lasts only 15k miles. I swapped my tires out to Continental ExtremeContact DWS and they're awesome. DWS are safer in the winter, more comfortable, and a lot quieter. I no longer need to blast my stereo to compensate the tire noise.

NYC Experience
I live in NYC and have 20's on my vehicle. The ride is fine (Conti DWS) and I haven't had any issues with potholes. But then again I don't drive through them fast and if there is any I can't get by I drive really SLOWLY and have had no issues bottoming the suspension. Obviously I'm not talking about going through craters.
With my stock wheels (RFTs) I convinced myself initially the ride wasn't so bad but later realized it was jarring when going through uneven roads, especially if you got a vehicle load of people. Its "bearable" when you're the only passenger. That's when I decided there was no way I would be able to get 22's, which I really liked because of the look. |

Not all damages from potholes are alike. So many variables to consider, speed, weight, how the tire / wheel hits the hole, temperature, etc. etc.
It also depends on how soft and how small of a sidewall you have as well. On my 535i with 19" 35 series sidewall front and 40 series side wall rear. I've hit potholes so hard and came out lucky with no visible damage to the wheel or tire. Its highly possible that the alignment is messed up though... Then I've hit a pothole really lightly and I had a bent rim and and bubbled up tire. In the first 6 months of ownership of that car I had to replace 3 rims and 1 tire due to the potholes. Also in case someone asks why not try to avoid them and swerve away? Most of the time in NYC especially on Cross Bronx its not possible to try to avoid them in at night and with other cars driving right beside you so there is no where to go but straight... By the time you've identified a pothole its too late. Also there is one part of the road where there is a huge bump that runs all the way across the road so that is unavoidable and you would only have to try to slow down. I currently ride on 19" with 50 series side wall RFT and so far so good. No issues.. But I bet if I was riding on 35 series or below I would be in trouble.. |

I love the look of the 20" wheels on the X5/X6, but having the accompanying low-profile tires in the NYC area has me concerned about making the same mistake again that I made with my current 550. |

i had a cracked wheel, 2 cracks in it actually, on my msport 20s. i bought it used with about 30k miles, found the crack 2 weeks after buying it. also i had a slight vibration before i took them off a couple weeks ago that i think may be a bend too. all my cars have had low profile tires yet this is the 1st time ive had problems. ive read a bunch about cracked wheel with the rfts, so be careful...

I just got my factory 19" replaced with staggered 20" (Bridgestone 275/40/20 front and 315/35/20 rear) and I love the new look and feel. To be honest with you, had to do some adjustment in the beginning to the feel of the car driving and not parking too close to the curb. Ended up scratching front right rim

Mostly driving style, I run 21 with no problems. I've had to use my tire warranty for nails... Haha
