Help With Battery Issue DSC and X DRive Malfunction Error Coolant Leaks Testing
Hello all,
Just finished the Valve Cover Gasket and Oil Filter Housing Gasket as well as cleaned the Intake valves on my E70 N55. It took me a while to do this about a month and had the battery disconnected. I finished, re connected the battery and trickle charged it for a day then did the oil Prime procedure on the engine prior to first starting. After finishing putting new plugs and Coil packs in, started the car and got the X Drive and DSC malfunction error message. I have started the car three times in last week letting it run for about 20 minutes. The alternator charge rate shows 14.8 Volts with a volt meter. Prior to last starting it, the battery was at 11.9 volts so i know thats too low and most likely reason for the DSC malfunction in the first place. After just running and turning off, the battery shows 12.33 volts. There were no issues with the battery prior to doing the repairs and batter disconnect. Anyone have a process to tackle these issues? Should i trickle charge the battery for 24 hours up to 12.6 or more and start there? Last edited by jzcop; 01-16-2024 at 05:19 PM.. Just drive around the block and those error messages will go away. If they don't read codes and go from there.

Will do, ill have some time after work tonite. Also to add, I did the transfer case fluid replacement prior to all this work but never received the DSC malfunction until the long term work was done and battery disconnected.

Did you use ISTA or protools to reset the transfer case adaptations?
*This is unrelated to the DSC/ABS errors you have. Those happen when the vehicle is w/o battery power for long periods of time. A short drive should remove them* |

The 11.9 volts, is a reading that i get at my car when I Connect a laptop or OBD reader on it when it’s not running. ( I did, valve cover, OFHG and inlet seals)
The X drive and DSC message will disapear when the car is rolling for a few meters. The charging system of the X5 is a thing on it’s own, the genarator is not always charging. |

Not sure if it can cause DSC/xdrve errors specifically, but the ground strap corrodes and causes issues with the electrical system. If its original it's definitely on its way out anyway being in the northeast. There are a few threads already covering things in more detail.

Well it appears that the DSC and Xdrive fault cleared itself after driving a bit, but 15 minutes into the drive, see smoke from under the hood and antifreeze sprayed under the air inlet pipe and around the expansion tank. I cant tell if its a leak or another issue. Annoying as i have run the car at least 4 times before this to make sure oil leak issues were resolved after repairs and there was no signs of coolant leaks at all. not sure if its a leak or something else now. Anyone have any recommendations on how to approach? TY

So adding an update, found my coolant leak, the upper radiator hose that connects to OFHG was not fully seated and pushed off on the test drive. I seated it correctly, refilled and now checking for any leaks. I do have a question, how do you pressure test the E70 N55 cooling system when you attach the fitting to the Reservoir tank, air escapes the overflow hole and you cannot ever get a hold on 15PSI?

Hey Gents, do you know of a fitting that will work for a pressure test on an E70 N55? i bought my kit from Amazon and when i use the white fitting, which it says its for BMW, air escapes through that overflow hole. Also on the 2nd road test new coolant leak from lower area this time a Y pipe of multiple hose connections. Again, don't know why this was not occurring during the pre test drive starts and runs last week. Attached is the test kit i purchased. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C2VSX35T...t_details&th=1

I wound up having a good fitting for pressure test but the problem was a crack at the seam in the overflow hole that goes down in the middle of the tank. replaced with a new tank and cap. next i see small leak from heater control valve and just ordered that to do. Also does anyone have a good diagram for the coolant hose route and type for my 2011 E70 N55? there's some hoses on passenger side near water pump that look pretty heat worn and im trying to purchase the correct ones.
