Catastrophic Engine Failure 2011 X5 50i

Hey all,

Had a major malfunction with my CPO 2011 50i M-Sport this morning. Was driving about 65-70 mph and went to accelerate when the car suddenly made a terrible grinding, shearing (metal falling on the ground) type of noise with very heavy vibration. After about 20-30 seconds of this, the engine malfunction warning came on but the engine never shut down.

After I coasted off the highway, I looked under the car and it appeared that all of the motor oil had poured out of the engine with a long trail of it behind the car as well. I'm no auto mechanic but am assuming this was a broken piston rod?

My question is this...Will the CPO warranty cover a new engine if that is what is deemed necessary? The car has 70K miles on it and is covered up to 100K I believe. Hoping to get a diagnosis from the dealer in the morning and trying to prepare against them screwing me too much. Any help/advice much appreciated!

Mate, that sounds messy. This should absolutely be covered under warranty, unless they can prove your partly responsible for this engine to self-destruct.

The dealer trying to pin this on me somehow is what I'm afraid of. I punch my throttle a bit but always get the maintenance done and keep the oil filled (my engine seems to eat it up pretty fast).

What would a dealership say to try and blame engine failure on a driver?

They'll obviously do their due diligence before forking the resources for a new engine. What can they blame it on? Could be anything from "negligence" on your side to performing supposed dodgy engine repairs at a non-BMW center. Who knows. I assume you've had it towed to a BMW garage?

Keep in mind that the dealership/service center wants to help you in this situation. It's corporate BMW that doesn't want to pay. Every time you service your car or have anything repaired under warranty the dealership makes money.

Sounds like your front drive shaft came apart. Haven't seen any n63 engines come apart on the highway. Should all be covered as long as you've done your maintenance. Have you had the driveshaft recall done?

I actually thought it might be the front drive shaft at first. But something punched a hole somewhere for all the oil to drain out of the engine block. Maybe just the oil pan?

I did have the recall on the drive shaft done last spring. I'll update this threD after I hear more from the dealership.

Could be transmission oil.

I thought that too, but I got the low engine oil level warning very quickly after the incident so I assume it was in fact engine oil. Still haven't gotten any info from the dealership.

I have a rental car currently. Any opinions on whether I shud expect to receive a loaner vehicle from the dealership for the duration of the repair?

Well known drive shaft failure ... damage to transfer case, transmission case, oil pan etc. - http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=714168

The recommended BMW inspection does not catch a possible imminent failure, especially when performed by a junior apprentice with a flashlight ...

I've gotten to the point where I replace them all if it has the recall on it. Not sure if the new part is any different than the old one. Have a feeling it's the same shitty driveshaft.
