EGR Issues

Took my x35d to the dealership the other day due to my doorchimes going off saying my door was open while I was driving. A couple days before I got it into the dealership the current issue drained the batter and I had to jumpstart the car. Shortly after that the check engine light came on. I didn't think anything about it because it happened close proximity to me jumping the car, just figured it was something related to me jumping it.
The dealership advised that the EGR valve is sticking open and that the cooler needs to be replaced which they advised was an $800 part plus the 4.5 hrs of labor that it shows bringing my price to around $1300.
Im confused that if the EGR valve is sticking why the cooler needs to be replaced when I can get a EGR valve off the web for like $200. Why replace the whole thing?
Also, couldn't I just do a delete for even cheaper and not even have to mess with it?
Im not mechanically savy so I don't know much about anything and this is my first diesel. So, I don't guess the EGR isn't even necessary?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
THANKS!

Just FYI, I have a 2011 BMW X5d with 70k miles.

Are you still taking it to dealer because it is under CPO warranty?
If not, stop talking to those idiots unless you have a verifiable warranty claim.

It looks like you are pretty leavel-headed, judging by your comments about deleting and egr valve itself.

Do you have any scanner to read BMW specific codes?

At the very least, can you ask the dealer to give you codes they pulled?

EGR valve acting up is most likely due to oil getting into its electronics side.

no there is no warranty, but for some reason when I took it there for the original issue they advised it was covered by the extended warranty? Maybe from previous owner?
now the EGR Cooler wasn't covered under extended warranty?

Anyways, my reason for taking it there was because my import mechanic here where I lived is way backed up and Im actually leaving tonight for VA, about 13hr drive and needed it looked at ASAP.

I do not have any type of scanner to read codes or anything.

EGR coolervis a pretty straight forward job. I actually have a good, low mile egr cooler in my garage.

I’m in VA too.

EGR bypass

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1334283

You can try this egr bypass if you are a little diy savvy. It's very easy and only need a paper clip, and about 5 minutes. A little better mpg. You will get a cel on dash unless you get it coded out. Helps with CBU as well. The good thing about it is you can just re-insert the wire at anytime and it's back to stock. Very useful page on the m57 diesel. Same engine different model car.

EDIT: correct url. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1401027

Unless doing a full delete and proper tune, I would not recommend blocking off EGR valve. That's just asking for trouble.

im just looking for the cheapest option.
got a lot that has happened all at once, my AC at home has gone out as well and that's gonna be $5000 alone.

I just knew people do EGR deletes which tells me that its not necessarily needed.

EGR cooler looks like its about 600-800 depending on where you get it.

The dealership told me the valve was either sticking open or is stuck open.

My issue is if its just the valve ($200) couldn't you just replaced that?

They were advising me the whole cooler needed to be replaced.
