Question E90 M3 to E70 X5M?

Looking for input from anyone that has made the switch.

Do you have any regrets?

I've come close to pulling the trigger a few times in the past couple of months, but since I'm happy with the M3, and haven't had the chance to drive an X5 M yet, I figured I would garner some feedback from people with firsthand experience with both.

Thanks,
X

Really only you can decide if it's worth the switch. I daily a 50i MSport and my wife daily drives an E92 M, and can say that the X5 is about the closest thing you can get to an M3 that can haul stuff around, and is pretty damn impressive as a highway bomber and holds its own in corners.

The X5 M is a beast, I am willing to bet you will love it, but you need to drive one.

I did exactly what you're asking.
Had E90M3 and moved to X5M about 7 months ago.
If you have any specific questions, I will try to answer or if you wanna talk, we can talk over the phone too. PM me.

If you don't track your E90 I would say do it. I switched from E90 M3 to F01 Alpina and bought E30 for the track. I bet X5M is fun car to drive. I have X5 diesel and love it too.

I went from 2013 e92 M3 to 2013 E70 X5M and absolutely love it. Only thing that would be better is to have both. I needed the extra space and enjoy the gobs of torque and power I have in the X5M. They're also much rarer in the Bay Area of CA, so it actually feels more special too.

I agree with the comment above, if you don't track...

Two very different vehicles. Around town X5M will likely feel more cumbersome than the M3, less fun. On the highway or on a trip of 100 miles or more, the X5M is just as much fun and superior in many ways.

I have an e46 M3 as my fun car and the X5m is my daily. The surge of power you get compared to an NA aspirated engine is very addictive. Personally, I prefer the X5m because of the comfort, room over my e46 (which is very similar to an e90 with my upgrades). Seems everytime an e90 M3 sees me, they want to try to run me, so that has to say something about what they think of it.

I own both and it is impossible to compare them, you need to find out by driving it. I love the look and power and it is a very nice upgrade to the spartan e9x interior.....try to get one with full leather and HUD. If you are bothered by the e9x gas mileage, look elsewhere though, since this is a very thirsty truck. If you have specific questions, let me know.

i had an X5M and M3 at the same time, the X5M is a great car and was very practical when my kids were younger (I actually miss it the last week with all the weather we're having here in DC)

but i did find it to be cumbersome and not nimble which I missed. So I traded into an M5. I love being back in a sedan. its different but smoother, less trucky...but not as practical

there is no perfect car..(though I wish I tried the RS7)

I went from an e46 M3 to an X5 M after my 3rd was born a few yrs ago, driving an X5 M is a simply amazing & surreal experience! However I got sick of filling it up about twice a week & sold it to buy a 35d.

Now that my oldest is out of car seats/boosters & my middle child is in a booster, I'll be going w/ a F10 M5 or the new M3; likely the latter (possibly even a CTS-V)

Thanks for all of the replies! I think I'm going to make the switch soon. I expect the fuel consumption to be close to the M3, but that's the price of having all that power on tap. I wish we got the 50D here, so I could have my cake and eat it too.

I never tracked the M3, and probably never would if I kept it.

I was getting 15 combined with M3 but I'm only getting 10-11 mpg with X5M (70% local/30% highway).

I drove x5m, x35i, x5d in the same day. The drive around town wasn't much different with the M. 35i felt slow under powered around town. Big torque of the diesel early on made it better to drive locally, WOT on the highway there is a nice easy fix for power up top .

Wife made a great point if you want an m put the cost difference toward the f80 or a 911tt I've been obsessing about for years now. Then I remembered my ctsv, all those horses and no where to run, big car. Wife is into cars, got lucky.

Will never track the x5, carries baby, commutes in highway traffic. Rarely would use WOT in x5m to really get the benefits.

In August we went x5d bc the tq felt better around town, merging, all that, should be able to tow a decent water toy in future or maybe a track car. They are hard to find with sport pkg and optioned out, but found one eventually.
I wouldn't trade the diesel for gas m sport pkg, even though the unpainted parts bug me.

I don't really care about the 26mpg avg tank. It wasn't a deciding factor.

I'll be picking one up soon. Not worried about fuel mileage at all, and I think it will suit my driving style better than the M3. I rarely take the M3 over 6k on the tach, so the lower power band of the X5 M will feel great.

10-11 mpg really on very low side of range for X5M. From thread on forum I would guess avg is around 15 or so. I do a little better. My E46 M3 was only a mile or 2 better than my X5M. 135is is 3-4 mpg better at about 19mpg.
