Successful All Season Tire Experience - X5 5.0
Hey all,
I went with all-season tires for winter. Here's an update. There are not very many options for the 5.0. After some exhaustive research, I found Toyo Proxes STIIs from tiresdirect.net, which by the way is an awesome retailer in Chicago. I found them in 315x35R20 and 275x40R20 so that I can run them all year round. They went on the car in late January. After driving them through March, I am extremely satisfied. They are quiet, handle great and they did very, very well in the ice and snow. Couldn't be happier. So, for those of you not really wanting to go to a snow tire, I believe this is a great alternative.

A couple of really good snows in Feb and plenty of ice. Also drove the car through Chicago winter wonder land in Feb. These tires are the bomb. Did great. I'll never need snows with these Toyos available. other option is the Conti DWS

Great feedback. I was debating whether to do this or get a set of snow 19s. This is a lot easier. Swapping tires/ rims is a pain 2x year!

Excellent, comparable to the Conti DWS.
I just love it that I can drive my cool stock wheels all year and I don't have to mess with tire swaps. These are the best tires that I have ever owned in a car. I don't know why I have never heard of Proxes before

Well -- maybe you can live with all seasons but I hated em in the winter...Now part of that could be you're in KY and I'm in MN?
I also came from an X6 with Pirelli Scorpion Snows to the X5 35d with All Seasons -- So my point of reference was literally from driving a tank. Generally taller, thinner tires with compounds developed not to harden in cold work best in winter. I am surprised a 20" all season as wide as you're running provided such traction.. I pulled my 19" all seasons two weeks into acquiring my X5 in January. IMO All Seasons are the best of no worlds... But I'm glad they're working for you Last edited by midwest 340xi 6sp; 03-24-2011 at 09:20 PM.. |
