Make sure your insurance premium is paid. You will slip and slide all over the place. The problem is the performance (pronouced "summer") tire. The compounds are not made for cold weather, and the tire will become very hard. Hard rubber has no grip. Additionally, the tread design is not well suited for snow or ice.
Similarly, I have an '09 X5 with M Sport and staggered summer performance tires. I found a set of nearly new takeoffs from another X5 that came equipped with Michelin all season OEMs to use as a winter set. Was an easy swap, and I'm glad I did it - for peace of mind alone. I found a nice set of 19" 211's, and they look good. Narrower in the rear, but not silly looking at all. You can also get a pre-mounted winter or all season set from Tire Rack - but they only have 18" rims available. My Winter set:

Could not get insurance here unless you have snow tires. The 20" are great. I had dynamic drive and with the 20" s I was asking my SA why my Z4 was not cornering well. Went so far as to order a cross brace for the Z4! But in winter it was stay at home or put the 18" snows on. We can get to -35 here so you need soft compound tires. When there is more than a couple of inches of snow you really need snow tires (not all season). We can get some heavy snow and having a narrower tire makes a difference - it does not sin on the snow and digs down to the pavement. For that reason I would highly recommend an 18" set. I am about to order an X5M and because of the brake size I can't use my 18"s - only 19" or 20.

I have the M Sport Package, with 20" 227M's. My winter set is a set of Style 210's with Bridgestone Dueler HP all seasons. They are takeoffs from a 3.0 X5, and I got a great deal from the dealer. As others have mentioned, I wouldn't recommend the 20" performance tires in the snow.

Guys, no question that 19-inch snow tires are the ideal, but, according to a few sources including Tire Rack, 20-inch dedicated snow tires are not that bad, for those of us who want to keep using the nicer rims year-round....Anyone has factual experience to confirm?

By the time you swap the tires on the rims (assuming you can find RFT's, should you desire) you might as well have a dedicated rim/wheel set. Just my $.02

I agree. I've decided to sell my 333M OEM 20 inchers that came on my 50i M package once i get my winter set. I've spent countless hours talking to wheel shops and people in the forum and i've decided to go with the TSW Nurburgring 20 inch gunmetal black rims for my winters.
Still on the fence if im going to go with 275/40/20's in Michelin Latitude Alpines or Scorpion Run Flats. My car wasn't equipped with a spare so i'm kinda worried about having non run flats if im in the mountains of tahoe. I'm also still debating whether or not i want to go with (1) 20x9's all around with 35mm offset in the front and 20mm offset in the rear to help fill the fender or go with (2) 20x10 in the front with 35mm offset and 20x10.5 in the rear with 20mm offset (for some reason they don't make a 10 inch width with a lower offset than 35mm) The TSW Nurburgring rims will run you between $350-$400 each depending on where you go. Add on $200 for a set of sensors and $50 for a set of BMW centercaps and another $1,000 or so on winter tires and your looking at $2,800-$3,000 out the door. I didn't want to settle for 18's or 19's on my vehicle for 4 months out of the year so i knew i had to go with 20's and decided a 275 would be the best tire for winter. Just need to be wary about going too staggered with the rim width because if you go 9 inch in the front and 10 inch in the back with the same tire they will look much more stretched in the rear. I figure 10 in front and 10.5 in rear will not look as noticeable and of course 9 inch all around will look the cleanest but my fenders may look a bit naked in rear. I didn't want to screw with spacers. Hope this helps as i'm still confused !! hahaha but i have an all black car so i think the black TSW's will look sweet. PIC attached of the rim i want to get |

All, i finally got my winter rim/tire setup installed. They turned out great. I wasn't happy with how the stock gunmetal color turned out so i had them powdercoated to match my car. Let me know what you think. Unfortunately the Mich Alpine's are more rounded than i thought so my rims stick out a bit which was a big disappointment, but i think i'll live. Thank god for the side cameras or else i'd totally F these rims up on curbs.

Hello,
I am new to forums. I currently have an '03 X5 4.4i Sport with 225/55/18 Blizzak (winter) and Dueler H/P Sport (all Seasons). Both sets are less than 2 years old, with little tire wear. I have placed an order for a '12 X5 3.5i Sport. Will I be able to use the '03 Wheels and Tires on the new '12 X5? Thanks in advance dmoney98 |

Spacers available here http://www.ecstuning.com/Search/es18...ign=hubcentric though these are listed for a 5 series, they may fit the x5 (however load rating may be an issue) .. |

Larger hub to smaller wheel center bore is always going to add offset. |

Just wanted to compliment you on your sick truck and surprised that I haven't seen your car around the Los Gatos area. Glad to have found this thread as I just ordered a 2012 X5 Sport Activity and plan on regularly taking the car up to Tahoe. I'm currently looking into getting a set of with Style 212s with Bridgestone Dueler H/L all seasons. Just wondering if you or other members could chime in how well the Dueler H/L all seasons handle in snow. I wanted 19" wheels as I kno they are ideal for winter conditions and with the harsh ride of 20" wheels. Last edited by Mammoth_Snoborder; 08-07-2011 at 03:51 PM.. |
