X6M diverter valve blow off

I was trying to put a Blow off valve instead of diverter valve on my X6M, after I disconnect the Diverter valve hose(which blow the air back to the intake), I found that the diverter valve became a blow off valve. It sounds cool but don't know if it is bad for my engine/turbo.
Here is my video link:

I've check a engine E70/E71 S63 engine manual to find out the Diverter valve, compare to the N63, the different is the N63 DV is build on the turbo, but S63 is build on the turbo charge pipe which is like N54. It also control by the throttle body.
Here is the PDF link about the S63 engine manual: http://xseries.su/manuals/bmw_x5/E70...s-x5-e70-6.pdf
and the N63 engine manual:
http://www.kneb.net/bmw/F01-02/02_N63%20Engine_WB.pdf
Save this two PDF it will give you more knowledge about your E70/E71 5.0i or M's engine.

I won't lie, that sounds pretty sweet not sure if there is any negative impacts, but if it's just a stand alone bov, it should be good as long as the whole on the intake side gets plugged

I'm using a 1 inch plug to blocked the hose which connect to the intake hose, so I should be ok. Wwhen I took it to a test drive the sound is loud inside, not sure in the ouside. I really sounds aggressive!

^ I see, let us know how it sounds when the engine cover is back on, i think that cover actually block off quite a bit of sound

Interesting, but don't think its a good idea since those air has been measured by the air flow meter and giving the signal to the ECU to control how much fuel to be add. Those are BPV, not BOV

You are right, it By pass no blow off. Sorry, lol. So far I just doing a test on the BPV, now I put it back on because I also worry about the MAF.

Just finished watching a video of this on the I6 boards, searched Google and came across this thread. So you never drove around for longer than a short trip to see how this affected your car overall?

PS - your KBNET link is broken.

I'd love to convert from BPV to BOV, countless threads can be found for other makes, but who knows if those same techniques can be applied to us.

So do people want to do this to get the cool sound or are they producing much higher pressures than stock to warrant it?

From my understanding to convert to a BOV you'll have to know the engines flow if vacuum to build your BOV. When converting a car from NA to turbo, most of these values are already known.

It seems that the S63 diverted valve is controlled by the car's computer unlike a physical device like a BOV. If you want that cool sound, you prob could just connect the bpv to a device that produces a certain sound when air flows through. And also seal the inlet port where the bpv normally puts the air before getting charged so it's not sucking unflilterd air from the engine bay.
From my understanding the air in this area is not being metered so the computer wouldn't know volume of air that would be escaping the system. A way to test this is create a vacuum leak in certain areas of the intake system and see if you get a check engine light. Do this to most NA engines or the S63TU and you'll prob get a checked engine light.

Converting the DV's to vent to atmosphere is a very common mod on the N54, which is well documented. They also don't use a MAF, but instead use MAP/TMAP sensors. Point being they've been doing this for years without issue. With that said...

I disconnected the hoses on mine today, allowing the DV to vent to atmosphere and then capped off the rubber hose ends that once connected to the DV's. While no noticeable difference in power, I can hear the DV's actuate much better...little flutter between a shift and a full BOV-type sound when coming off full throttle. Only issue is that once I come off WOT, I immediately get a Reduced Power Warning and I'm getting a 30FF code. I'll play with it more this evening since I'm at work now.

I'm interested to see how this turns out. Just for pure sound that is awesome. If we can't get turbo spool sound we should at lease be able to get some blow off. hahah

Run that line right out the side vent under the blinker in the fender. hahhaaa
