wheel arch flare question
I took the 20" 299M wheel set from our '13 X5M and put 'em on the GF's '13 X5 3.5 Premium (not M-sport). The wheels look great but stick out beyond the plastic wheel arches.
What p/n's do I need for the plastic wheel arch flare kit and how hard are they to install? Anyone have pics? Thanks!

I'll have her take a few pics when she gets back. My first job is to get rid of her stock 19" rubber

Check ebay. There are some good prices. Installation is really simple I heard. There are some DIY instructions floating around on other boards. I just ordered mine.

Everything you need for this:
Wheel Flare Kit Plastic Rivet Setter Plastic Fastener Remover Drill the center of the existing plastic rivets with a 1/8" drill bit, then pry out with the tool. After all the fasteners are removed, the existing flares need a good hard tug to remove. The rear ones have four white plastic clips that are reused, including the rubber o-rings. Installation is pretty straight forward. |

It's very easy to install the arches, I didn't drill out the old rivets. I flat head screw driver and a quick pry pops the heads off the rivets pretty easy. Once the rivets are off just pull them off. Push the extended arches on and rivet them in place. I did mine with wheels on, it might have taken an hour or ninty minutes.
Like someone else said usually eBay has reasonably priced flares that even come with rivets and the gun.

The fender flares are held on with plastic non reusable pop rivets. Just push the centre of the rivet out and it will fall out, then the flares are simply removed with barely any force.

Digging out this thread..
How many rivets do I need? Don't have car or flares here at work and thought I can look that up with Realoem. However realoem tells me the amount of ? for 07142151750 and 8 for 51777171004. http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?...71&hg=51&fg=16 Does anyone know how many ? are and where is the best place to order? My local BMW dealer wants $4 per rivet. bmwofsouthatlanta.com $0.70 and $0.62 with $14 shipping. ecs 0.92 in a 20 pack for $18.59 and $0.86 for a 10 pack of 8.65 + $12.33 shipping. |

I used a drift to remove the center pins and just pulled the rivet out with a plastic trim tool so no chance of damaging anything. Installed the new flares and it take less than an hour to do them, and that with setup and clean up, if you.
If you have a kid, have them help you so they also learn how to do things, way too many kids can't work on anything and that's just sooooooo wrong.. |

If you need rivets you can find them on ebay as well 25 rivets go for under $10.
You also have to realize when you're doing the installation that there are 2 different types of rivets. The ones smaller in diameter are for the front. Also when installing the rivets you might have to perform the pulling operation with the tool more than once. Keep doing it until the tool pulls out the stem, do not break it off by hand. |

i agree with everyone here. very easy to do. hardest part was trying to put back one or two of the rivets because the wheel was in the way.
btw. what did you guys do with the old wheel arches? i tried to sell mine and got no takers. hate to just throw them away. |

i received my flares friday and went to install them today. it was pretty simple getting the old ones off except i had two metal rivets in each of the rears which required drilling.
i put the front two on w/o hiccup. they slipped right on/in and lined up perfect. however, the back two were a different story. if i held them up to the truck they seemed to curve much quicker than the fender. in other words, if i lined up the middle/top then the left and right ends would both be well inside the diameter of the fender. i thought maybe they just needed to get attached and i could work them in and they almost do... but leave some major gaps. did you guys get your back two to slip right on like my front two did? also - most of the rivets won't fit as they're too wide - barely. they fit into a couple of the original holes but only a few. curious if i got a cheap knockoff or i just got the wrong package for my truck. 2012 X5 diesel w/o sport package. |
