My turns for random check engine light and lots of codes
I was driving home from work in lots of traffic as I usually do. At one point the transmission seemed to refuse to shift up a gear and the engine kept revving around 3k rpm (I have a diesel, so that's high).
I feel like the car's been shifting occasionally poorly for a while, so I thought maybe it was related. Also note I just replaced my battery with a Duralast from Autozone about a week ago, registered with Carly, and it's been driving great since. As for the codes, here's all Carly shows me Motor Control: Code: 004121 DDE Main Relay Code: 004BAC Reducing agent active tanjk level sensor signal sensor monitoring error ABS/DSC/Brake: Code:006EC4 Steering Angle Sensor Transmission Control: Code: 0055C3 VGSG wheel Notlaufregelung activated. No DXC desired torque setting Code: 0055DO CAN Message Instrument Cluster: Code: 00A3B1 CAN signal fault indicator Code: 00A559 Shutdown Heating/AC: Code: 009C69 PTC Kit Immobilizer System: Code: 00A128 unknown failure Systems: Code: 00A6D1 Short Circuit to positive or open circuit - additional water pump Code: 00E1CF The Central registry is incorrect/unknown fault So based on the fact that like none of these are related, would it be reasonable to think that it's due to the battery being an issue? Should I perhaps let it trickle charge over night? The thing that makes me wonder if it's a legitimate problem is the fact that the transmission acted really weird just before the light came on. And that happened a good 25 minutes into my commute |

well, to update my own thread here... the voltage on carly says only 11.9V, which, annoyingly, is the same as it used to always show before the new battery.
So I've hooked it up to a battery tender and will let it sit over night. However, I went to clear all the codes, and all of them went away except for the two Transmission codes. So I guess I may have an actual problem with that... Last edited by JGard; 01-11-2016 at 08:41 PM.. |

So what I did last night was I tried to clear all the codes with Carly. For whatever reason, it never showed the two transmission codes as having cleared, but I just left it. Then I hooked the car up to my battery tender and let it sit overnight.
This morning as I was leaving for work, I checked the tender and it still said "charging" and not "charged" which was a little disconcerting, but whatever. When I started up the car, no more CE light. Drove to work this morning (15 miles) and everything seemed normal. I know it tends to take a few repeat experiences before a CE light comes on, though, so I'm still crossing my fingers. Perhaps this also means I just have to trickle charge my battery semi-regularly (which is annoying since it's new) |

i am having a similar issue with strange transmission issues. brought it to the dealer and they think it is related to the active tank sensor being bad. i do have a bad sensor and it is going to be replaced on thursday. i will let you know if that is the issue or not. they think it has something to do with the emmisions and the car going into a safety mode.

Interesting. Please do update once you get some news.
I went online to make a service appt with my local dealer (I have an extended warranty through them) but the soonest I could make one is for Jan 22nd. So I have two weeks to go. With any luck the light won't come back, but I have a very strong feeling it will. And you mentioned the active tank sensor, that is one of the warnings I got, so there could certainly be something to it. My warranty cost me about $2500. So far it's paid out about $700 in repairs. Maybe this sensor could be another costly one to help make that warranty purchase worth it |

Yep, CE light is back, as I figured it would be. I have yet to check the code. If it's the Urea tank/sensor, so help me god, my warranty better cover it. It did NOT cover my EGR Cooler because it apparently doesn't cover exhaust components. But it did cover a NOx sensor, so I'm hopeful it would also cover this.

My warranty covered the tank so you should be good.
I'm wondering if it's not so much your battery but possibly your alternator. As we all know alternator and battery issues are notorious for causing all sorts of faults and given the long list of error codes you had before I'd be leaning in that direction. Have you noticed any change in drivability when you add a load to it such as running the A/C, radio, fan, etc together? |

I got to checking the code and it's the DEF active tank sensor. I hope your warranty was aftermarket and not BMW
I checked my list of what's covered and what's not. It specifically says exhaust components, but it generally seems to refer to potential wear items. Like I said in my previous post, it covered a NOx sensor, but it didn't cover EGR Cooler. I should be safe/OK. Of course I JUST bought myself an e36 M3 as a fun car, so my wife is pissed at the idea I may also have to shell out $2k to get this fixed |

All of a sudden this morning, Check Engine light is off. WTF.
I mean, I guess I'm not complaining, but if the DEF tank is failing, just stay on so I can have the dealer fix it already |

I had the same experience. Sometimes it would be on, other times it wouldn't. Drivability was the same, no impact. I had to drive around like that for 1.5 months before the part finally came in from Germany.

Ah, ok, so this isn't unusual. Sounds like how a failing sensor would act, I suppose. Fine for a while, crap for a while... I'll keep my appointment for next week as I'm sure the code is still stored and they'll be able to read it

Couple of days ago I got CEL with P203A or 004BAC (Reductant Level Sensor Circuit) code. Took it to the dealer and they replaced active tank and hose under warranty (10 years/120k miles).

Anyone have advice on this? Now a few weeks later the car starts and runs for a few minutes dies giving the dsc xdrive malfunction. Bunch of codes 4121 dde relay 4d36 reduce agent pressure plausibility, cf55 message error reciever dme dde, 6f56 message error dme dde.
I chargec battery overnight and restarted this morning montoring voltage. It started at 12.6 dropped a little during cranking but was at 15 or so while running....for the minute or so before it quiet. I was going to change relay next but i have not found it yet. Appreciate any advice. Thanks |
