Break In Service?

Picked up a brand new '13 X5 Premium and it has about 1400 miles on it. I'm thinking about getting a break in oil change. Is it a waste of money?

BMW recommends oil changes at 15k miles. However, I change both of my BMWs oil between the recommended interval. 7,500 miles is perfect, IMO. The oil drains pretty black so I can't imagine running 15k miles between changes, especially with a hot turbo charger.

As for break in, I wouldn't change it too soon. Just wait until 7,500 miles at least. Doing your first oil change too soon can reduce the chance of all moving metal parts to wear down appropriately, which poor metal to metal or metal to bearing contact. That can also lead to heat spots internally = premature engine wear.

No, I haven't and I have no plans to since my BMWs are still under warranty. Just complete all services between the recommended intervals for severe driving and you should be good. Don't over think it.

If it was needed BMW would recommend it, for example they do it on the m3 which has its first service after break in at 1200 miles.
