Anyone regret getting a 35 over a 50?

I'm considering trading in my 2011 x5 35d in for a 2012 x6 35i Do any 35i owners here regret getting the 35 instead of the 50?

Here are my issues:

In order to keep close to my target price, I'd have to give up the sport package, active steering, and the technology package. The 50i would still be $5k more after that. I have HUD in my 35d and I think I'd miss it. I also have adaptive drive. I spent this weekend driving various x6s with and without sport (thus adaptive drive) and I was quite unhappy with the feel of an x6 without it.

Call me lazy, but I hate filling up my gas tank. Even though I only get 19mpg on my 35d, that's still almost 14days of in-town driving (~430 miles). Getting 12ish or so isn't so bad I guess; I got only 14-15 in town in my 3.0 e53, but it had a 24+ gal gas tank (~340 miles). With that 22.5 gal tank, it would bum me out if I could only go 270 miles on a tank. Put a 30 gal gas tank on that sucker and I'd be all over it!

I'm an aggressive driver and i want to get out of the 35d because it's so sucky off the line. My e53 felt like a rocket by comparison and that's just sad. I drove the e53 in sport all the time and would down shift it if I wanted to make 'stupid' moves on the highway. It's nice to not have to do that in the 35d.

I don't want to get into that car and feel like I've made a mistake again. I could get enough real world action on the adaptive drive to tell that it was necessary. The engines, not so much. Sure, the 50 is more of a beast, and I would love it, but is the 35 more than enough to put smile on my face too?

I faced the same dillema when I bought mine. Coming from a 12 cyl VW Phaeton that was a torque monster, I was worried about giving up all that power. I ended up opting for the loaded 35i rather than a stripped 50i and have no regrets at all. There are times that I wish it had a little bit more power, but I've grown to love and rely on the gadgets and options and wouldn't give them up for the power bump. And there's no way I would omit the sports package - adaptive drive makes such a difference in my area which is notoriously pothole-ridden. I drive mostly in the city and find that drive-sport mode makes a tremendous difference.

x6/x5 35d will rape you`re e53 3.0 .....
and between the X6 40d and X6 35i i will buy anytime the DIESEL . Same hp 306 , but much more torque , and better 0-100 6.5 vs 6.7 for the diesel.

At 60, yes. Off the line? Definitely not. I owned that 3.0 e53 for 7yrs, so I definitely know what I could do with it. With my e70 35d, even in sport mode shifting on my own, I feel like I should be saying "I think I can. I think I can" every time I step on the gas from zero.

No diesel x6s in the states. Perhaps the rumored 45d for this fall with it's tri-turbos alleviates some of that diesel take-off pain (perhaps even the 40d does too, but all I have available to me for comparison is the 35d in my garage).

0-60 is very good if you know how to start it . Try putting it in the M2 hold the brake and accelerate to 1700-2000rpm and release it . with this 0-60mph i m neck to neck to e92 335d

I know where you are coming from. I have had my X6 35i for over two years now and that question still crosses my mind. Should I have gone with the 50 instead...? To be honest, I still love my fully loaded 35i but kinda feel like i missed out with the whole lack of power compared to the 50 so i picked up a juice box and will have it installed after after my next trip to the dealer in two weeks. With the juice box I will add 80 whp so I will have all the packages along with a more robust engine. Ultimately it would have been nice to own a 50i, but without the packages, I think yo may not enjoy the X6 as much IMHO

You got it. In about two weeks I will let you know how it goes... I know you already ordered your 50i and I'm sure you will enjoy the ride but it truly would be a shame to have such a beautiful car then become dissatisfied with it after a short while if you miss all the toys. I wish you luck with your purchase!!

I actually ordered a 35i just yesterday! Since I had already gotten used to all the goodies on my x5, I thought that I'd miss them if they weren't also on my x6. Oh, if money were just limitless.

This is why I'm interested in how your juice-boxing goes. I had read some about it and I'm intrigued.

Good luck!

I think you will enjoy the 35i. To be honest, it has plenty of power stock, so the ride is not weak at all. The only time I can say i wish it had more power is when I come up against the guys with the Cayanne Turbos and the Super charged Range rovers and we end up doing al lil chest pumping on the hywy... lol. Thats why I decided to get the juice box. I will definitely let you know how it works out when i get it installed. Seems like we agree that if you are gonna drive an X6, you shouldn't drive a base model, and for a $500 juice box, you will be right up there with the 50 without breaking the bank! I f you want to do a little online research, check out Burgertuning.com JB4 tuner chip. A co worker of mine put in in his 335i and he is super happy with the outcome! lol

Ok, so i had the JB4 tuner chip installed on my 2009 X6 35i last Friday and I have to say... what a difference!! She is riding way more powerful. Im doing 0-60 in about 5 seconds. Took it on the LIE (NY) and got it up to 130 MPH for about 5 mins but it felt like I was only doing around 50 MPH! Now my friends with their Chargers and Camaros want to challenge the Bimmer. According to the stats provided by bugertuning, in getting about 430 WHP and 450 Tourque with the juice box. What do you guys think? I've always valued the feedback I get from you guys.

Silly question, but why didn't you considering chipping your X5 35d? There is a Juicebox d (for diesel) model avail. I guess it's too late to ask that, since you posted this over a month ago, and probably already received your new X6... But was curious as to why you went to an x6 from an x5 without weighing all options first

What supporting mods do you have? Exhaust, Down Pipe, Charge Pipe, Meth?

You need to dyno your X6 before you can claim you are getting 430hp and 450Lb Tq. That's a jump of over 130hp and 150lbs Tq. I'm not doubting that you feel a good amount of gains from the chip, but I highly doubt it is a much as you think...

It's more likely around 80-100 hp and 50-100lbs Tq... Even the 335i's (n54's) with just a JB4 aren't claiming numbers like that in the 3 Series forum (they are claiming around 380-400hp).

I understand completely what you mean. I noticed you are in NY. Do you know of any good places to get a good DYNO done on my car? I am claiming those numbers cause when I first put my order in for the car back in '09, i was told that the X6 35i with the sport package included would be pulling down 350 whp and 400 tque. With the JB4 adding 80 whp and 50 tque, doing the math got me those numbers. I do not have any other mods because I don't want to void the warrenty, lol. Any feed back would be great. never had the car dyno'ed before, so I am really curious as to my baby's stats and numbers cause I am a Bimmer fan, and my pride wants to not have her beat by no chevy or dodge if you know what I mean...

Samurai,
With just a tune alone you may be getting 340-350 at the wheels if you're lucky
Stock X6 35i regardless of the trim will dyno below 270 at the wheels (whp)
With just JB4 you are probably in 320-330hp range
For your X6 to be at 430whp you'll need full blown bolt ons with race gas and methanol

Also you mention something about the engine being "more robust"
Were you actually referring to 35i-with-tune vs 50i?

I considered trying a juice box, but in the end, I really wanted a car that drove 'smaller'. I came out of an e53, and although the e53 isn't THAT much smaller than an e70, it sure drives like it is in my opinion. I like the feeling of how an x6 drives better than an e70. And I really like how it looks; I didn't get an x6 when I bought my e70 because a 4-seater just wouldn't work for me. I don't know how I'm going to feel about the lack of airspace though. Only time will tell.

One thing that is of note though is the much maligned x6's 'lack of visibility'. Sure it's a whole heck of a lot less than an e70, but I had a 3series coupe loaner the other day and there was road in only 1/2 the rear view mirror, it had tiny side mirrors, rear windows that were no bigger than the x6's, and you're so low to the ground that you can't see what's around you (and feel lilliputian at drive-thrus). I haven't read any reviews that blast the 3series for lack of visibility -- sheesh.

And -- I don't have it yet. I ordered the first week of April. Web site shows it's on the ground at my dealer. My CA had originally estimated Monday of this week, but no call yet. I'm being patient because I want to drive my 35d to San Antonio this weekend. I don't want to start the break-in period with a highway jaunt.

Hey AndreyATC,
I have to say that if the numbers you said earlier are accurate, I will be highly disappointed. I really was under the impression that before i installed the chip, i was already getting 350 HP with 400 tourque. Ultimately, I really should get the DYNo done as to remove all doubt. I see you are in the general NYC area, know any good spots to get this done. Another reason why I was under the impression that MY numbers were accurate is because just yesterday afternoon, I put it up against my friends Charger Hemi... (he tells me he is pulling down 428 whp) and though we started out neck and neck for the first few feet, once I started manipulating the gears manually, I gained the lead pretty easily. Talk to me bro. This is my first (high performance) car, so I'm still learning myself. As for the "robust engine" comment, yes, I was comparing my chipped 35i with a stock 50i because i was sure i was pulling down 430 hp as to the 50i's 400 hp. However, yo have made me aware that untill i get my baby DYNO'ed, I won't know for sure so I souldn't be so quick to boast just yet, lol. Let me know what's up.
