Close to buying an X5
Hey guys,
A newbie post but I would really value the collective insight of the group here. We have a couple of Bimmers in the family already, a Frozen Silver M3 and a 1973 3.0, and are thinking about an X5 as we have our first child on the way. Anyway, having test driven a few, here's what I'm thinking: 35i Sport Activity Carbon Black Nevada Bamboo Convenience Package M Performance M Sport Technology Package Is there anything I'm missing? A number of these are cosmetic choices I realize, and if I could do a custom factory color I would, but apparently that's not gonna happen. Also, any ideas what I should expect to pay, given they will most likely have to special order the car? Thanks in advance, Matt. |

You're missing adaptive drive and premium sound. if you wait until an Oct. production, soft close doors come standard in the conv. package. I didn't bother with the tech package, but if you like it, go for it. Wish I had done the leather dash though.

Backup and top view are included in the conv. package. I use the top view all the time, makes backing into the garage so much easier.

Or go with standard and upgrade the speakers with a BSW kit.

35i Sport Activity
Carbon Black Nevada Bamboo Convenience Package M Performance M Sport Technology Package Here's my thoughts based on having a 2 yr old Another baby on the way Needing lots of torques in my vehicle And owning a 2012 Msport 535 I always need more power The 35 is quick but now with a whole car full of stuff, people stroller etc The 35 doesn't make it fun for me. Probably because I'm also coming from an ml63 Amg . Ps With the stress of having a child u may need the hp for those Nights u can't sleep and feel compelled to go for a cruise Us dads ... We've all done it! ARS is a fantastic option although someone just posted on this forum that is not extremely noticible in every day driving. Which will take place most of the time Performance pckg I just tested in the 5.0 and surprisingly it's not even noticible from driving the regular msport. Although in the 35 it may come in handy to have the xtra torques of pulling power Let us know how it goes All the best Rob

Thanks Rob that's a funny post!
I know what you mean, but given the fact my lead-footed wife will be mostly driving the X5, I think its better we keep the horses tethered. Besides, to blow of steam on those sleepless nights that I'm not looking forward to, there are some other choices available without baby seats |

With Adaptive Drive now being a separate $3K+ option, I would have to think long and hard about getting it (and find an X5 with it and without it and drive it back to back). Prior years had it part of the sport package and I think it was worth it.
I would however strongly recommend you to consider Active Steering. I personally hate the steering in the X5 without it. I'm also convinced that if each dealer had an X5 with it and without it the take rate would be incredibly high (dealers disagree with me on this saying people won't want to pay for it - yet I still contend that if you drive an X5 with it, you will get it). Alas it is a priority one option so they can't even order it for stock. Last but not least....heated steering wheels rock. I realize there are better ways to spend $750 (put it towards AS), but oh do I love this option. (yea, I know you are not in Chicago, but you still do have cold days there - just not Chicago cold) PS - sweet color on your M3

i'd demand base rate on the MF. no mark up (.00135 this month)
and IMHO, i'd get the diesel. We have a '12 and LOVE LOVE LOVE it (currently there is a $4,500 eco credit from BMW as well) |

Soft close doors are a great option. I have them on my 09 m5 it keeps you from slamming the door all the time and damaging the internal parts.

With 1 young kid, X5 is overkill so you will be fine (we started with a 325iT and it more than did the job). When he kid gets older and has friends / siblings, you will need the 3rd row seat to avoid mini-van hell in my experience (we just upgraded from a regular X5 which we got when the second kid arrived).

I'd also argue that BMW has tested both of these and you probably won't have many issues (although you will have more issues with soft close doors since there are motors in each door now (besides the window)). Still, I agree, a great option to have for $600 (especially with a baby because nothing is worse than waking them up after they have fallen asleep on a drive!).

Premium sound is worth it. Also, ask the dealer to replace the Dunlop tires with Continental DWS. The Dunlop tires last about 15k miles and they're noisy.

IMHO NEITHER of these are "must haves" or actually "important" but rather could be considered luxuries with rather high price tags to them. IMHO, neither is worth the price they (now) cost. If you have an extra $7K to put into the car then they may be "nice to haves" but definitely are not MUST HAVEs. The same goes for the leather-wrapped dash. It IS VERY nice but is also another $2 GRAND added to the bottom line so now you would be up to nearly $10 GRAND in "NICE TO HAVEs" that some people on here are claiming as MUST HAVES. If it was that easy, we would all own 120 foot yachts parked on the Aegean sea, right?
One of the things I use to LOVE on my 7-series were the soft close doors. They simply add a level of "class" to the vehicle and I would have LOVED to have had them on this truck but could not wait until mid October to order. If they are FREE as part of the package, then get them by all means! I also arranged for the dealer to "swap" the Dunlop Run Flats out for the Continental DWSs Last edited by ndabunka; 10-23-2012 at 11:36 AM.. |

Adaptive drive really does transform the X5 though, definitely a must have, especially if you're buying any other model that doesn't have the sport suspension available. It gives you the best of both worlds, the sport suspension with little body roll but it can be soft and forgiving when you need it to be.

Now, don't mistake frugality for AD apathy. That is not the case at all. Rather, I DO agree that it is a "nice feature" to have but don't think that I would hold out for AD given the additional $4K. In fact, I specifically would NOT order one with it on it simply because of the 8% baseline price increase for that feature. Now, if I was shopping used and had the opportunity to buy an X5 with AD for a thousand more than one without. Damn skippy, I'd buy it |
